Measures of Central Location
The Mode
Learning Outcomes
- The most common value(s) if more than one value repeats in the data
- If no values repeats in the data, there is no mode
- If two values repeats as often, there can be more than one mode
Finding the mode (just one mode)
Example 3.1.1
Find the mode of the following numbers: 19, 20, 21, 21, 21, 23, 24, 24, 27
Step 1: Find the repeating value(s): 19, 20, 21, 21, 21, 23, 24, 24, 27
Step 2: Determine the value(s) that repeat the most: 21
Conclusion: The mode for the above data set is 21.
Finding the mode (Multiple modeS)
Example 3.1.2
Find the mode of the following numbers: 19, 20, 21, 21, 23, 24, 24, 27
Step 1: Find the repeating value(s): 19, 20, 21, 21, 23, 24, 24, 27
Step 2: Determine the value(s) that repeat the most: 21 & 24
Conclusion: The modes for the above data set are 21 and 24.
Finding the mode (No Mode)
Example 3.1.3
Find the mode of the following numbers: 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 27
Step 1: Find the repeating value(s): there are no repeating values
Step 2: Determine the value(s) that repeat the most: N/A
Conclusion: There is no mode for the above data set.
