The only way we could have reduced the variation in the sample averages was to take a very large sample size (~24,000 pens)! The key in an example like this is to realize several things:\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>Averages and standard deviations only make up part of the description of this type of data set<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Analyzing the fluctuations that occur over time can be very informative also<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Capturing\/recording what can be controlled in these types of examples can be helpful.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h1>Possible Controls for Demand Example<\/h1>\r\nThe \"controls\" that are possible for the demand problem is in choosing the supplier, level of inventory to hold (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoho.com\/inventory\/guides\/what-is-a-reorder-point.html\">re-order point<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netsuite.com\/portal\/resource\/articles\/inventory-management\/safety-stock.shtml\">safety stock<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/e\/economicorderquantity.asp#:~:text=Economic%20order%20quantity%20is%20an,its%20holding%20and%20storage%20costs.\">order quantities<\/a> to choose.\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_2356\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"807\"]<a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/1130sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2128\/2024\/06\/SafetyStock.jpg\"><img class=\"wp-image-2356 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/1130sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2128\/2024\/06\/SafetyStock.jpg\" alt=\"Graph of inventory levels. In the latter case, it can be very difficult to order an appropriate amount of stock month-over-month and very costly when the incorrect levels are ordered. Whereas, some examples, where is an uncontrollable level of variance that occurs over time must have other metrics and analysis performed in addition to the sample statistics and interval estimates. We will visit a space fastener example in <a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/1130sandbox\/chapter\/example-of-quality-control-for-space-fasteners\/\">a future section<\/a> that is well described by its sample statistics.\r\n<h1>Further Analysis Demand Data (VIDEO)<\/h1>\r\nAs we saw in <a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/1130sandbox\/chapter\/confidence-intervals-for-%cf%83-known\/\">the previous section<\/a>, if we want to reduce the margin of error to five pens for the we need to sample over 24,000 demands. Why is this so large and what should be considered and changed in our approach? We will explore these issues in the next example.\r\n<h2>Example 49.1<\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"color: #003366\"><strong>Problem Setup<\/strong><\/span>: Your boss is unhappy with the overwhelming sample size required that you just came up with (in Example 48.1.2 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/1130sandbox\/chapter\/confidence-intervals-for-%cf%83-known\/\">previous section<\/a>) and wants you to explore other ways to estimate the true monthly demand.\r\n\r\n<strong><span style=\"color: #003366\">Questions<\/span><\/strong>: Several questions when attempting to discover reasons why the confidence interval is so wide and\/or the required sample size is so large when attempting to reduce the margin of error:\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>Is the sample of 101 months of demand a proper sample?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>What type of data is this demand data?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>How might we visually 'inspect' the data?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>How are 'off' is the average from the actual data month-over-month?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>How might we better generate a confidence interval for future months' demands?<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<span style=\"color: #003366\"><strong>Solutions<\/strong><\/span>: <a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/1130sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2128\/2024\/06\/Example48-1-3_Solutions.xlsx\">Click here<\/a> to download the Excel file shown in the video below:\r\n\r\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/8lPTTc1morw\r\n<div>\r\n<h1>Click here to reveal the written solutions shown in the video above<\/h1>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>The sample of 101 demands is not a proper sample. We can consider the fact that perhaps we should segregate different months differently. We have only sampled from one store\/warehouse and not many. Also, this data changes over time. There are many considerations that should be taken into account when examining\/sampling time series data.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>This demand data is time series data where one entry has been recorded per month over several years.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>In order to visually 'inspect' the data, we could create a <a href=\"https:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/msoffice\/forum\/all\/how-to-plot-a-line-graph-with-dates-on-the-x-axis\/0e792a31-9411-4149-a76f-d34d3e6960eb\">Line Chart<\/a> in Excel of the data. <em>Note<\/em>: we must be sure that the dates we have in the left-most column are properly formatted as <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/date-function-e36c0c8c-4104-49da-ab83-82328b832349\">dates<\/a> in Excel.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The margin of error we calculate of 77 is a good reflection of the average deviation between the average and the actual number of units demanded. Some months have larger deviations that others also. A good question to ask of time series data is whether is <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/oEBeBpStHW8?si=NC6qcFJNaCZ_2yP9\">seasonality<\/a> in the data or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/a\/autocorrelation.asp\">dependence on previous timesteps<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>We could try using <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-au\/office\/create-a-forecast-in-excel-for-windows-22c500da-6da7-45e5-bfdc-60a7062329fd#:~:text=On%20the%20Data%20tab%2C%20in,date%2C%20and%20then%20click%20Create.\">Excel's Forecast Sheet<\/a> in the Data Tab to build up a different type of 95% confidence interval. Forecast sheets using a type of <a href=\"https:\/\/otexts.com\/fpp2\/ets-forecasting.html\">ETS<\/a> (Exponential Smoothing Method) to generate its forecasts. In the latter case, it can be very difficult to order an appropriate amount of stock month-over-month and very costly when the incorrect levels are ordered. Whereas, some examples, where is an uncontrollable level of variance that occurs over time must have other metrics and analysis performed in addition to the sample statistics and interval estimates. We will visit a space fastener example in <a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/1130sandbox\/chapter\/example-of-quality-control-for-space-fasteners\/\">a future section<\/a> that is well described by its sample statistics.<\/p>\n<h1>Further Analysis Demand Data (VIDEO)<\/h1>\n<p>As we saw in <a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/1130sandbox\/chapter\/confidence-intervals-for-%cf%83-known\/\">the previous section<\/a>, if we want to reduce the margin of error to five pens for the we need to sample over 24,000 demands. Why is this so large and what should be considered and changed in our approach? We can consider the fact that perhaps we should segregate different months differently. We have only sampled from one store\/warehouse and not many. Also, this data changes over time. There are many considerations that should be taken into account when examining\/sampling time series data.<\/li>\n<li>This demand data is time series data where one entry has been recorded per month over several years.<\/li>\n<li>In order to visually &#8216;inspect&#8217; the data, we could create a <a href=\"https:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/msoffice\/forum\/all\/how-to-plot-a-line-graph-with-dates-on-the-x-axis\/0e792a31-9411-4149-a76f-d34d3e6960eb\">Line Chart<\/a> in Excel of the data. <em>Note<\/em>: we must be sure that the dates we have in the left-most column are properly formatted as <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/date-function-e36c0c8c-4104-49da-ab83-82328b832349\">dates<\/a> in Excel.<\/li>\n<li>The margin of error we calculate of 77 is a good reflection of the average deviation between the average and the actual number of units demanded. Some months have larger deviations that others also. A good question to ask of time series data is whether is <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/oEBeBpStHW8?si=NC6qcFJNaCZ_2yP9\">seasonality<\/a> in the data or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/a\/autocorrelation.asp\">dependence on previous timesteps<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>We could try using <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-au\/office\/create-a-forecast-in-excel-for-windows-22c500da-6da7-45e5-bfdc-60a7062329fd#:~:text=On%20the%20Data%20tab%2C%20in,date%2C%20and%20then%20click%20Create.\">Excel&#8217;s Forecast Sheet<\/a> in the Data Tab to build up a different type of 95% confidence interval. Forecast sheets using a type of <a href=\"https:\/\/otexts.com\/fpp2\/ets-forecasting.html\">ETS<\/a> (Exponential Smoothing Method) to generate its forecasts.
