This latter half of this course is called <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Statistical_inference\">inferential statistics<\/a> <\/em>- which means that we draw inferences about the population by using samples. In the end, we use the information from the sample to improve business decision-making.\r\n<h1>What is a Random Sample and Why is it Important?<\/h1>\r\nIt is true that many of our beliefs about the characteristics of a population come from a relatively small sample of that population. The reason for sampling is quite simple:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>we often don't have the time,<\/li>\r\n \t<li>money<\/li>\r\n \t<li>or the resources to measure the entire population.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nWe will also find that the amount of information and the accuracy associated with using sampling can be well defined leaving us with a good understanding of the population characteristics that are being studied.\r\n<h1>Three Important Rules When Taking Random Samples<\/h1>\r\nIn taking a random sample from the population there are 3 important rules to remember:\u00b7\r\n\r\n1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We want the sample to be as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/r\/representative-sample.asp#:~:text=A%20representative%20sample%20is%20a,three%20males%20and%20three%20females.\">representative<\/a> as possible of the population.\r\n\r\n2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We need to try to avoid <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sampling_bias\">bias<\/a> in our sampling\r\n\r\n3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A simple random sample means that <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/edu\/power-pouvoir\/ch13\/prob\/5214899-eng.htm\">each item in the population has an equal probability of being selected<\/a><strong>.<\/strong>\r\n<h2>Importance of the Three rules<\/h2>\r\nWhy are these rules important how can they help us? They can:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Can help us set up our study<\/li>\r\n \t<li>To ensure that we are not starting off with errors in our study.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h1>Representative, Random, Non-Bias Samples (Examples)<\/h1>\r\nLet us examine what it looks like for a sample to be random, representative and non-bias in our first example for this section below.\r\n<h2>Example 42.1<\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"color: #003366\"><strong>Problem Setup<\/strong><\/span>: We are trying to conduct a study that has to do with ALL BCIT students, we need to consider the fact that we have day school, night school and various campuses throughout the Lower Mainland.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #003366\"><strong>Question<\/strong><\/span>: How to we construct a <strong>representative <\/strong>sample of ALL BCIT students?\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #003366\"><strong>Solution:<\/strong><\/span>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>We need to consider these different groups and locations of students.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Try to avoid bias is an important part of any quantitative study. For example, suppose you were conducting a taste test between 2 different items. It would be important not to include any information to the person about the two items being tested.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>We need to sample randomly from each of the groups of students using a random sampling technique.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h2>Example 42.2<\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"color: #003366\"><strong>Problem Setup<\/strong><\/span>: Suppose MacDonald's Restaurants created a new Big Mac with some slight differences and they want to know if it would be preferred over the original one.\r\n\r\n<strong><span style=\"color: #003366\">Question<\/span><\/strong>: How should MacDonald's go about testing if there is a preference for the new Big Mac over the original one?\r\n\r\n<strong><span style=\"color: #003366\">Solution<\/span><\/strong>:\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>It is important for MacDonald's not to disclose information regarding the original and new burger to the people taking the taste test because they would be introducing a bias into their study.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>They also need to try to conduct their sample in such a way that each type of person\u00a0 in the population should have an equal probability of being selected.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>They should go about this sampling in a strategic random way.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h1>Random Sampling (Example)<\/h1>\r\nEven though this sounds easy enough, it can be difficult to collect a sample in such a way that each type of person or item\u00a0 in the population has an equal probability of being selected\r\n\r\nThis is a common error in carrying out sampling studies. See the example\r\n<h2>Example 42.3<\/h2>\r\n<strong><span style=\"color: #003366\">Problem Setup:<\/span><\/strong> Suppose your instructor wanted to randomly pick three people from the class.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #003366\"><strong> Question:<\/strong><\/span> Would it be okay for your instructor to point at the first three people she sees or should she\u00a0pick 3 people from different locations in the room (front; middle and back)?\r\n\r\n<strong><span style=\"color: #003366\">Solution<\/span><\/strong>: The answer is neither option is ideal. To be <strong style=\"text-align: initial\">truly random, <\/strong><span style=\"text-align: initial\">remember -\u00a0 each item has an equal likelihood of being selected. <\/span><span style=\"text-align: initial\">Thus, when creating a random sample of picking 3 people from a class of 100 students we could consider a number of approache:<\/span>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"text-align: initial\">First we start by ensuring that all students in the class correspond to one number (from 1 to 100). <\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"text-align: initial\">Next we need a method of <\/span><strong style=\"text-align: initial\">selecting <\/strong><strong style=\"text-align: initial\">randomly <\/strong><span style=\"text-align: initial\">one of the 100 available numbers. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<span style=\"text-align: initial\">Some approaches may be as follows:<\/span>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>Put the numbers from 1 to 100 on individual small pieces of paper; put all the pieces of paper in a hat; mix the paper pieces thoroughly; randomly select a piece of paper for the hat.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Roll a massive dice with 100 sides to it!<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Generate a random number from a computer (whereby the first 3 digits correspond to our group), or<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Use your calculator to generate a random number<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Use a Random Number Table<\/li>\r\n \t<li>See more suggestions in the next section also.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h1>Using Computers to Create Random Samples<\/h1>\r\nThere are many ways in which you can generate random numbers and probably the easiest is to use Excel or your calculator in selecting a truly random sample. One important technique that uses random samples to understand the operations of processes and activities is called Activity Sampling.\r\n<h2>Activity Sampling<\/h2>\r\nActivity Sampling is a technique in which a large number of observations are made over a period of time of one group of machines, processes or workers.\r\n\r\nThis technique will be further discussed when discussing the estimation of the proportion of a population.\r\n<h2>Pseudo Random Sampling<\/h2>\r\nWhen using computers to do random sampling, it's important to know:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Computers can't really do random sampling.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"text-align: initial\">Instead, they can only do pseudo random, or \"good enough\" sampling. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Techniques in Excel<\/h2>\r\nSome techniques that can used to sample using Excel are:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Use Excel's <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/office\/rand-function-4cbfa695-8869-4788-8d90-021ea9f5be73\">RAND()<\/a> function to generate numbers.
