Who does this affect?<\/h2>\r\n

Table errors<\/h3>\r\nWhile sighted users can scan a table to understand the relationship between rows and cells, some users of assistive technology require those relationships to be indicated audibly. Consider the following demonstration of a screen reader reading a table without proper code followed by the same table with proper code.\r\n\r\nhttps:\/\/mediaspace.langara.ca\/media\/t\/0_xh5sy6li\r\n\r\nTake note that in the table without proper code the screen reader could move from left to right and row to row to announce the cell contents. However, when deeper in the table it becomes unclear what the cell data refers to. In the properly coded table screen reader software announced the header labels such as brand, type, and colour and announced what column or row the cell is in. This helps users that cannot see the table to understand the information and relationships between data.\r\n\r\nEnsure tables have a header row or first column. The use of merged or split cells should be avoided because it may not be clear which cell follows the merged or split cell. Sections<\/h3>\r\n\"ScreenshotSections group slides together. As with descriptive and unique slide titles, properly named sections act as navigational waypoints for users of assistive technology. The use of \"Default Section\" as a section name will appears as a Default section name<\/strong> error in the Check Accessibility tool. In addition, using the same name for sections, such as repeating \"Section 2\" for multiple section names will appears as a Duplicate section name<\/strong>\u00a0tip.\r\n

How to fix it<\/h2>\r\nThe\u00a0Accessibility Assistant\u00a0<\/strong>pane will display\u00a0Missing table header<\/strong> and\u00a0Use of merged or split cells.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n

<\/a>To add a table header:<\/h3>\r\n
    \r\n \t
  1. Use the\u00a0Missing table header<\/strong> button in the\u00a0Accessibility Assistant<\/strong> to add a header row or designate the first row as header row.\r\n\"\"<\/li>\r\n \t
  2. Or select the table.<\/li>\r\n \t
  3. Move to the\u00a0Table Design<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\r\n \t
  4. Ensure\u00a0Header Row<\/strong> and\/or First Column <\/strong>(if column A also contains header labels) is checked.\r\n\"\"<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\nThis applies not only a distinct visual style to the top row of the table, but also designates the top row as a header row to indicate meaning to assistive technology.\r\n

    To merge split or split merged cells:<\/h3>\r\n\"\"If you select the Use of merged or split cells\u00a0<\/strong>button, you will be directed to information box but you will have to manually selected the problem cells and adjust them.\r\n
      \r\n \t
    1. Select the cell(s).<\/li>\r\n \t
    2. Move to the\u00a0Layout<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\r\n \t
    3. Choose\u00a0Merge Cells<\/strong> or\u00a0Split Cells<\/strong> as appropriate.\r\n\"\"<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\nNote that\u00a0Use of merged or split cells<\/strong> appears as a warning. This is because there are appropriate uses of merged or split cells, such as in the header or total row. Verify the reading order of your table by placing the text cursor in cell A1 (top left) and press\u00a0Tab<\/strong> to see the reading order. If a merged or split cell could make it unclear, revise your table.\r\n

      To change section names:<\/h3>\r\nIn the Accessibility Assistant select Default section name\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a0Duplicate section name.<\/strong> This shortcut allows you to\u00a0Rename Section<\/strong> by selecting the button.\r\n\r\n\"\"\"\"\r\n\r\nOr\r\n
        \r\n \t
      1. Examine the section names in the slide thumbnail panel.\r\n\"\"<\/li>\r\n \t
      2. Right-click on a section name and choose\u00a0<\/span>Rename Section.\r\n<\/strong>\"\"\r\n<\/strong>Or if you do not need sections, use\u00a0Remove Section\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a0Remove All Sections<\/strong> to remove the section groupings but not delete any slides.<\/li>\r\n \t
      3. Type a new, unique name in the\u00a0<\/span>Rename Section<\/strong> window.\r\n<\/span><\/strong>\"\" \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t
      4. Select\u00a0Rename<\/strong> or press\u00a0<\/span>Enter.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n

        \r\n\r\nSections are not commonly used in PowerPoint and are not necessary unless a presentation has 100s of slides or discrete parts with clear delineation of start and end.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

        How to prevent it next time<\/h2>\r\nWhen inserting a table,\u00a0Header Row<\/strong> should be toggled on by default.\r\n\r\nAvoid the use of merged or split cells except where appropriate.\r\n\r\nIf you are using sections, give them unique and descriptive names.\r\n
