Read the following writing excerpt:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<blockquote>When the red grapes arrive at the winery, they are destemmed and crushed. The liquid that is left is made up of skins, seeds, and juice. The stems are removed. They contain harsh-tasting tannins. Once the grapes are destemmed and crushed, the liquid is pumped into a fermentation container. Here, sulfur dioxide is added. It prevents the liquid from becoming oxidized. It also destroys bacteria. Some winemakers carry out the fermenting process by using yeast that is naturally present on the grapes. Many add a yeast that is cultivated in a laboratory.<\/blockquote>\r\n<p id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_p03\" class=\"para editable block\">This section examines several ways to combine sentences with coordination and subordination, using this excerpt as an example.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s01\" class=\"section\">\r\n<h1>Coordination<\/h1>\r\n<p id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s01_p01\" class=\"para editable block\">Coordination joins two independent clauses that contain related ideas of equal importance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"textbox\"><strong class=\"emphasis bold\">Original sentences:<\/strong> I spent my entire paycheck last week. I am staying home this weekend.<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s01_p03\" class=\"para editable block\">In their current form, these sentences contain two separate ideas that may or may not be related. Am I staying home this week <em class=\"emphasis\">because<\/em> I spent my paycheck, or is there another reason for my lack of enthusiasm to leave the house? To indicate a relationship between the two ideas, we can use the coordinating conjunction <em class=\"emphasis\">so<\/em>:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"textbox\"><strong class=\"emphasis bold\">Revised sentence:<\/strong> I spent my entire paycheck last week, <strong class=\"emphasis bold\">so<\/strong> I am staying home this weekend.<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s01_p05\" class=\"para editable block\">The revised sentence illustrates that the two ideas are connected. Notice that the sentence retains two independent clauses (<em class=\"emphasis\">I spent my entire paycheck<\/em>; <em class=\"emphasis\">I am staying home this weekend<\/em>) because each can stand alone as a complete idea.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s01_s01\" class=\"section\">\r\n<h2>Coordinating conjunctions<\/h2>\r\n<p id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s01_s01_p01\" class=\"para editable block\">A <span class=\"margin_term\"><a class=\"glossterm\">coordinating conjunction<\/a><\/span> is a word that joins two independent clauses. The most common coordinating conjunctions are <em class=\"emphasis\">for<\/em>, <em class=\"emphasis\">and<\/em>, <em class=\"emphasis\">nor<\/em>, <em class=\"emphasis\">but<\/em>, <em class=\"emphasis\">or<\/em>, <em class=\"emphasis\">yet<\/em>, and <em class=\"emphasis\">so<\/em>. Remember that when you use a coordinating conjunction in a sentence, a comma should precede it.<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s01_s02\" class=\"section\">\r\n<h2>Conjunctive adverbs<\/h2>\r\n<p id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s01_s02_p01\" class=\"para editable block\">Another method of joining two independent clauses with related and equal ideas is to use a conjunctive adverb and a semicolon. A <span class=\"margin_term\"><a class=\"glossterm\">conjunctive adverb<\/a><\/span> is a linking word that demonstrates a relationship between two clauses. Read the following sentences:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"textbox\"><strong class=\"emphasis bold\">Original sentences:<\/strong> Bridget wants to take part in the next Olympics. They train every day.<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s01_s02_p03\" class=\"para editable block\">Since these sentences contain two equal and related ideas, they may be joined using a conjunctive adverb. Now, read the revised sentence:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"textbox\"><strong class=\"emphasis bold\">Revised sentence:<\/strong> Bridget wants to take part in the next Olympics; therefore, they train every day.<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s01_s02_p05\" class=\"para editable block\">The revised sentence explains the relationship between Bridget\u2019s desire to take part in the next Olympics and their daily training. He called the manufacturer for advice.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p class=\"simpara\"><strong>Collaboration<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s01_s02_p10\" class=\"para\">Please share with a classmate and compare your answers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h1>Subordination<\/h1>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s02\" class=\"section\">\r\n<p id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s02_p01\" class=\"para editable block\">Subordination joins two sentences with related ideas by merging them into a <span class=\"margin_term\"><a class=\"glossterm\">main clause<\/a><\/span> (a complete sentence) and a <span class=\"margin_term\"><a class=\"glossterm\">dependent clause<\/a><\/span> (a construction that relies on the main clause to complete its meaning). Coordination allows a writer to give equal weight to the two ideas that are being combined, and subordination enables a writer to emphasize one idea over the other. Take a look at the following sentences:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"textbox\"><strong class=\"emphasis bold\">Original sentences:<\/strong> Tracy stopped to help the injured man. She would be late for work.<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s02_p03\" class=\"para editable block\">To illustrate that these two ideas are related, we can rewrite them as a single sentence using the subordinating conjunction <em class=\"emphasis\">even though<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"textbox\"><strong class=\"emphasis bold\">Revised sentence:<\/strong> Even though Tracy would be late for work, she stopped to help the injured man.<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s02_p05\" class=\"para editable block\">In the revised version, we now have an independent clause (<em class=\"emphasis\">she stopped to help the injured man<\/em>) that stands as a complete sentence and a dependent clause (<em class=\"emphasis\">even though Tracy would be late for work<\/em>) that is subordinate to the main clause. Notice that the revised sentence emphasizes the fact that Tracy stopped to help the injured man, rather than the fact she would be late for work. We could also write the sentence this way:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"textbox\"><strong class=\"emphasis bold\">Revised sentence:<\/strong> Tracy stopped to help the injured man even though she would be late for work.<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s02_p07\" class=\"para editable block\">The meaning remains the same in both sentences, with the subordinating conjunction <em class=\"emphasis\">even though<\/em> introducing the dependent clause.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">TIP: To punctuate sentences correctly, look at the position of the main clause and the subordinate clause. If a subordinate clause precedes the main clause, use a comma. If the subordinate clause follows the main cause, no punctuation is required.<\/div>\r\n<div id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s02_s01\" class=\"section\">\r\n<h2>Subordinating conjunctions<\/h2>\r\n<p id=\"fresh-ch07_s02_s02_s01_p01\" class=\"para editable block\">A <span class=\"margin_term\"><a class=\"glossterm\">subordinating conjunction<\/a><\/span> is a word that joins a subordinate (dependent) clause to a main (independent) clause. Alcoholic fermentation then begins.<\/span> Here, the red wine production process differs from the method used in white wine production. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Red wine is fermented for a shorter time. It is fermented at a higher temperature.<\/span> Whereas white wines may ferment for over a month, red wines typically ferment for less than two weeks. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">During fermentation, contact between the skins and the juice releases tannins and flavor compounds into the must. This process is known as maceration.<\/span> Maceration may occur before, during, or after fermentation. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The fermentation process is completed. Coordination allows a writer to give equal weight to the two ideas that are being combined, and subordination enables a writer to emphasize one idea over the other. Take a look at the following sentences:<\/p>\n<div class=\"textbox\"><strong class=\"emphasis bold\">Original sentences:<\/strong> Tracy stopped to help the injured man. Notice that the revised sentence emphasizes the fact that Tracy stopped to help the injured man, rather than the fact she would be late for work.
