The verb f<\/strong>aire\u00a0<\/b>can translate into English in different ways depending on the context. It can mean: \"to do\"; \"to make\"; \"to be\" (weather); \"to equal\" (math); \"to go\", and more.<\/p>\r\n

Here is how we conjugate\u00a0faire\u00a0<\/strong>in the present tense:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

(a) Most of the time\u00a0faire<\/strong>\u00a0means either \"to do\" or \"to make\". Thus, the question\u00a0Qu'est-ce que tu fais ?\u00a0<\/strong>could mean \"What do you do?\" or \"What do you make?\" depending on the context.<\/p>\r\n

Faire<\/strong> can also be used to talk about what someone is doing now or soon, and what work people do in general. For example:<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u2014 Qu'est-ce que tu\u00a0fais<\/strong>\u00a0ce week-end ? (What are you doing this week-end?)<\/em>\r\n\u2014 Je travaille au restaurant. (I am working at the restaurant.)<\/em><\/p>\r\n

\u2014 Que\u00a0fait<\/strong> ta m\u00e8re ? (What does your mother do?)\r\n\u2014 Elle est ing\u00e9nieure. (She's an engineer.)<\/em><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

(b) Faire<\/strong> is said in many expressions that name specific activities like before (faire du ski, <\/strong>faire une promenade<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/span>faire du camping, etc.<\/strong>):<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

On\u00a0fait du kayak<\/strong> \u00e0 Deep Cove. (We kayak at Deep Cove.)<\/em><\/p>\r\n

Nous\u00a0faisons la sieste<\/strong>\u00a0\u00e0 2h. (We take a nap at 2 o'clock.)<\/em><\/p>\r\nEst-ce que vous faites des promenades<\/strong> le week-end? (Do you go for walk on the weekend?)<\/em><\/blockquote>\r\n

\u00a0 *Familiarize yourself with the list of common and useful expressions with <\/span>faire<\/strong> (such as to hike, to party or to take a nap) in the vocabulary section<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

(c) The verb faire<\/strong> is also used to talk about the weather.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u2014 Quel temps fait-il ?<\/strong> (What's the weather like?)<\/em>\r\n\u2014 Il fait<\/strong> chaud ! (It's hot!)<\/em><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

For an English speaker, the French equivalent of How\u2019s the weather? looks like you're saying What weather is it doing, making? A word by word translation does not work here, so you need to memorize the entire expression. Carefully review and learn the weather expressions in the vocabulary section<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n

There are three ways to respond to the question Quel temps fait-il ?<\/strong> and they all begin with the impersonal subject pronoun Il <\/strong>(which refers to no one).<\/p>\r\n\r\n
