Note culturelle: le croissant

Le croissant is a well-known French buttery pastry in a crescent shape. Not originally French, it is said that it was created in Vienna to celebrate the end of a siege by the Turcs in the 17 Century. Marie-Antoinette of Austria brought it to France when she married Louis XVI in the 1770s along with other viennoiseries (French baked goods) and by the 20th Century it was perfected and became a symbol of French cuisine.
