2 Licensing considerations when creating a collection

All Creative Commons licensed materials can be used in collections, and any CC licensed can be applied to a collection. However, as mentioned in the previous chapter, it is important to emphasize that the CC license chosen for the collection does not apply to individual items included in the collection. Each item retains its own license.

Similarly, creators still must observe the licensing conditions for the materials they are using. As stated by Creative  Commons (n.d.a), if the material being used has a NonCommercial license, the collection cannot be used commercially, as this will contradict the terms of one or more licenses included in the collection. The table below demonstrates this aspect, indicading that BY-NC, BY-NC-SA, and BY-NC-ND cannot be used in a collection made for commercial purposes.

This table was extracted from the FAQ section “If I create a collection that includes a work offered under a CC license, which license(s) may I choose for the collection?” from the Creative Commons FAQ page.
