When applied to the work of a carpenter, this makes us think differently about a building\u2019s role in the surrounding environment. A building affects, and is affected by, the ecosystems and human communities in which it exists, and taking steps to ensure this relationship is respectful will improve the sustainability of our built environment. For example, many places across Canada are blessed with abundant forests which, when logged responsibly, can provide sustainable timber for building. Wood buildings embody their local environment and can also result in reduced emissions as compared to alternative products (we will explore this more in future chapters). Lower-emissions building materials are core to the process of \u2018greening\u2019, but, viewed through a slightly different lens, they are also an example of Indigenization.\r\n\r\nIndigenous communities across Canada are demonstrating how \u2018greening\u2019 and Indigenous ways of knowing can be compatible.
