{"id":197,"date":"2018-04-05T16:01:29","date_gmt":"2018-04-05T20:01:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/cres1100\/chapter\/components-of-effective-communication\/"},"modified":"2018-04-05T16:08:01","modified_gmt":"2018-04-05T20:08:01","slug":"components-of-effective-communication","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/cres1100\/chapter\/components-of-effective-communication\/","title":{"raw":"Components of Effective Communication","rendered":"Components of Effective Communication"},"content":{"raw":"\n<p class=\"ManualText\">Effective communication in collaborative conflict engagement involves attending to four components:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Content:&nbsp;<\/strong>What the conflict is about \u2011 the substantive aspects of what we need to resolve&nbsp;e.g., budget, timeline, roles and responsibilities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Process: <\/strong>The way in which we structure or organize our engagement with each other as we try to resolve the conflict, e.g., how and when to meet, how we share information, how we make decisions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Relationship:&nbsp;<\/strong>How we treat each other, or how we demonstrate respect, validation, concern and positive intention toward the other (or not).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emotion:&nbsp;<\/strong>How we feel about the above components: content, process and relationship, either positively, negatively or both.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\"><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Ironically, when in conflict, we often focus on the substantive problems (content) to the detriment of process or relationship.
