Using your example of a physiological positive feedback mechanisms from the previous question, explain how the positive feedback loop is shut down once the function is served.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Part 1: <\/strong><strong>Homeostasis<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Homeostasis refers to a relatively stable set of conditions within an organism\u2019s <strong>internal environment<\/strong>. Within the human body, maintaining a healthy environment for living cells requires maintaining appropriate conditions in the [pb_glossary id=\"2127\"]extracellular fluids[\/pb_glossary] \u2013 including the [pb_glossary id=\"2129\"]interstitial fluid[\/pb_glossary] and blood [pb_glossary id=\"2128\"]plasma[\/pb_glossary] \u2013 for each living cell to be able to function properly. The constancy of an internal environment is important in allowing chemical reactions to take place at rates necessary to maintain the body.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Conditions maintained by homeostasis<\/strong><strong><br style=\"clear: both\" \/><\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">There are <strong>three<\/strong><strong> important conditions <\/strong>that must be met in order for the chemical reactions in the body to occur at the rates necessary for homeostasis. The first condition is that there must be a <strong>proper concentration of gases, nutrients, water and salts<\/strong>. The gases involved are oxygen, which is necessary for the process of [pb_glossary id=\"2230\"]cellular respiration[\/pb_glossary] which produces energy for the body, and carbon dioxide, which is a waste product of this process, but also must be present in certain amounts for other processes to occur normally. Nutrients provide reactants, [pb_glossary id=\"2173\"]enzymes[\/pb_glossary], cofactors and energy for chemical reactions while water and salts determine the fluid balance, [pb_glossary id=\"2134\"]electrolyte[\/pb_glossary] balance and the pH of the body.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The second important condition for homeostasis is an <strong>optimum temperature <\/strong>that is about 37\u00b0C. The rates of chemical reactions are temperature dependent, occurring slower at cooler temperatures and faster at warmer temperatures. Additionally, the shapes of proteins (remember that proteins fulfill many roles in the body including providing structure, muscle contraction, and enzymatic function, among others) are temperature dependent - if they overheat they may dissociate and be rendered non-functional.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The third and final condition is an <strong>optimum pressure<\/strong>, for example, blood pressure. The concentrations of various substances in the body and the rates at which these substances move through the body are both dependent on blood pressure. Blood pressure is influenced by the volume of blood in the cardiovascular system, the diameter of the blood vessels and the strength of cardiac muscle contraction.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>The Internal Environment<\/strong><strong><br style=\"clear: both\" \/><\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Homeostasis is maintained within the internal environment of the body. The human body is composed of cells surrounded by extracellular material which is mostly fluid. Cells are responsible for controlling bodily activities and also controlling the composition of the material that surrounds them. The <strong>internal environment<\/strong> is the environment in which cells are found and is thus defined as the fluid inside the body, but outside of cells.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The fluid inside the cells in the body is the <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"2126\"]intracellular fluid[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong>, also called cytoplasm (cytosol and the fluid inside organelles). Intracellular fluid makes up approximately 2\/3 of the total body fluids.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The fluid outside the cells in the body is the <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"2127\"]extracellular fluid[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong>. The internal environment is thus equivalent to the extracellular fluid. Extracellular fluid is found in blood (i.e. [pb_glossary id=\"2128\"]plasma[\/pb_glossary]), in tissues (i.e. [pb_glossary id=\"2129\"]interstitial fluid[\/pb_glossary]), in the lymphatic system (i.e. lymph), in joints (i.e. synovial fluid), in the eyes (i.e. aqueous and vitreous humors) and in the central nervous system (i.e cerebrospinal fluid). Extracellular fluid amounts to about 1\/3 of the fluids in the body as a whole.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The three main fluid types within the extracellular compartment are plasma, interstitial fluid and [pb_glossary id=\"2138\"]lymph[\/pb_glossary]. <strong>Plasma<\/strong> is the liquid portion of blood and functions to move red and white blood cells, platelets, nutrient molecules, gases, electrolytes and wastes throughout the circulatory system. Materials are exchanged at capillary beds where the blood vessel walls are thin enough to allow materials to move between the blood and the tissues.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The fluid that surrounds living cells within tissues is called <strong>interstitial fluid<\/strong>, which has a unique composition relative to both intracellular fluid and blood plasma. Components of plasma move into the [pb_glossary id=\"2218\"]tissues[\/pb_glossary], thus the interstitial fluid is partly derived from the plasma of blood. Interstitial fluid is also in contact with cells and is thus partly derived from the intracellular fluid.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Interstitial fluid must be returned to the circulatory system in order to maintain appropriate pressure within the cardiovascular system and for waste materials from the cells to be removed. However, the interstitial fluid is under lower pressure than the plasma in the capillaries and so only 85% of the interstitial fluid is returned directly back to the circulatory system at the capillaries (mostly as a result of the osmotic gradient, the higher concentration of solutes inside the capillaries \u201csucks\u201d the water back in). The remaining 15% is returned indirectly through the vessels of another system called the lymphatic system. The fluid in these vessels, now called <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"2138\"]lymph[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong>, is derived from tissue fluid but is different from it in composition. Lymph is collected into larger lymphatic vessels that eventually drain into veins close to the heart.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Although the extracellular and intracellular compartments are distinct from one another, there is a continual exchange of materials between them. Cells must receive nutrients, have waste materials taken away and exchange gases. Refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/dcbiol110311092nded\/chapter\/unit-5-cell-biol\u2026mbrane-transport\/\">Unit 5<\/a>, Cell Membrane Transport to review how substances move between intracellular and extracellular compartments.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h5><strong>Stressors<\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A constant internal environment is not easily maintained. The internal environment is continually subjected to disturbances that unless counteracted, would quickly cause a new set of conditions in the body that could result in illness or death. A <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"2435\"]stressor[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> is any stimulus that causes an imbalance in the internal environment. Stressors may be factors external to the body or from within the body itself.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Examples of <strong>external stressors<\/strong> are a lack of environmental oxygen, which may occur at high altitudes or extreme environmental temperatures, such as excessive heat in a desert or excessive cold in the Arctic. Examples of <strong>internal stressors<\/strong> are rapid changes in blood pressure-hemorrhaging can cause a drop in pressure while unpleasant thoughts may raise blood pressure, or changes in levels of nutrients such as an increase or decrease in blood glucose levels.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Part 2: <\/strong><strong>Feedback loops<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Maintaining [pb_glossary id=\"2264\"]homeostasis[\/pb_glossary] requires that the body continuously monitor its internal conditions. From body temperature to blood pressure to levels of certain nutrients, each physiological condition has a particular set point. A <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"2436\"]set point[\/pb_glossary] <\/strong>is the physiological value around which the normal range fluctuates. A <strong>normal range <\/strong>is the restricted set of values that is optimally healthful and stable. For example, the set point for normal human body temperature is approximately 37\u00b0C (98.6\u00b0F), however, physiological body temperature tends to fluctuate within a few degrees above and below that set point depending on factors such as activity, digestive function, stress, etc. Control centres in the brain and other parts of the body monitor and react to deviations from homeostasis using negative feedback. <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"2437\"]Negative feedback[\/pb_glossary] is <\/strong>a mechanism that reverses a deviation from the set point. Therefore, negative feedback maintains body parameters within their normal range. The maintenance of homeostasis by negative feedback goes on throughout the body at all times, and an understanding of negative feedback is thus fundamental to an understanding of human physiology.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Negative Feedback<\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Feedback systems have five basic components (Figure 1). A <strong>sensor<\/strong>, also referred to a [pb_glossary id=\"2270\"]receptor[\/pb_glossary], detects when the <strong>stressor\/stimulus<\/strong> produces a deviation in a physiological value away from the set point. This change in value is reported to the control centre. The <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"2438\"]control centre[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> is the component in a feedback system that compares the value to the normal range. If the value deviates too much from the set point, then the control centre activates an effector. An<strong> [pb_glossary id=\"2439\"]effector[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> is the component in a feedback system that produces a <strong>response,<\/strong> which in the case of a negative feedback loop causes a return of the physiological value to its normal range.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"647\"]<img src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/dcbiol110311092nded\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/750\/2019\/07\/image1-8.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"647\" height=\"380\" \/> <strong>Figure 1. (b) Body temperature is regulated by negative feedback.[\/caption]\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">For example, in the control of blood glucose, specific [pb_glossary id=\"2273\"]endocrine[\/pb_glossary] cells (<strong>[pb_glossary id=\"2270\"]receptors[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong>) in the pancreas detect excess glucose (<strong>stimulus<\/strong>) in the bloodstream. These pancreatic beta cells (<strong>control <\/strong><strong>cen<\/strong><strong>tre<\/strong>) respond to the increased level of blood glucose by releasing the [pb_glossary id=\"2171\"]hormone[\/pb_glossary] insulin into the bloodstream. The insulin signals skeletal muscle fibres, fat cells ([pb_glossary id=\"2305\"]adipocytes[\/pb_glossary]), and liver cells (<strong>[pb_glossary id=\"2439\"]effectors[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong>) to take up the excess glucose (<strong>response<\/strong>), removing it from the bloodstream. As glucose concentration in the bloodstream drops, the decrease in concentration \u2014 the actual negative feedback (outcome) \u2014 is detected by pancreatic beta cells, and insulin release stops. This helps to prevent blood sugar levels from continuing to drop below the normal range.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Humans have a similar temperature regulation feedback system that works by promoting either heat loss or heat gain (Figure 1b). When the brain\u2019s temperature regulation centre in the [pb_glossary id=\"2440\"]hypothalamus[\/pb_glossary] receives data from the sensors indicating that the body\u2019s temperature exceeds its normal range, it stimulates a cluster of brain cells referred to as the thermoregulatory centre. This stimulation has three major effects:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Blood vessels in the skin begin to [pb_glossary id=\"2214\"]dilate[\/pb_glossary] allowing more blood from the body core to flow to the surface of the skin allowing the heat to radiate into the environment.<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"text-align: justify\">As blood flow to the skin increases, sweat glands are activated to increase their output. As the sweat evaporates from the skin surface into the surrounding air, it takes heat with it.<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"text-align: justify\">The depth of respiration increases, and a person may breathe through an open mouth instead of through the nasal passageways. This further increases heat loss from the lungs.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In contrast, activation of the thermoregulatory centre by exposure to cold reduces blood flow to the skin, and blood returning from the limbs is diverted into a network of deep veins. This arrangement traps heat closer to the body core and restricts heat loss. If heat loss is severe, the [pb_glossary id=\"2440\"]hypothalamus[\/pb_glossary] triggers an increase in random signals to skeletal muscles, causing them to contract and producing shivering. The muscle contractions of shivering release heat while using up ATP. The brain triggers the thyroid gland in the endocrine system to release thyroid hormone, which increases metabolic activity and heat production in cells throughout the body. The hypothalamus also signals the adrenal glands to release epinephrine (adrenaline), a hormone that causes the breakdown of glycogen into glucose, which can be used as an energy source. Direct link:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/uBGl2BujkPQ\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/uBGl2BujkPQ<\/a>[\/caption]\r\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Positive Feedback<\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>[pb_glossary id=\"2441\"]Positive feedback[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> intensifies a change in the body\u2019s physiological condition rather than reversing it. Positive feedback loops employ the same five basic components as [pb_glossary id=\"2437\"]negative feedback[\/pb_glossary] loops, with the difference that a\u00a0deviation from the normal range results in more change, and the system moves farther away from the normal range. Positive feedback in the body is normal only when there is a definite end point. Childbirth, blood clotting and [pb_glossary id=\"2442\"]micturition[\/pb_glossary] are some examples of physiological positive feedback loops (there are a number of other examples in immunity, in female reproductive cycles and at the level of cellular function).<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Childbirth at full term is an example of a situation in which the maintenance of the existing body state is not desired. Enormous changes in the mother\u2019s body are required to expel the baby at the end of pregnancy. And the events of childbirth, once begun, must progress rapidly to a conclusion or the life of the mother and the baby are at risk. The extreme muscular work of labor and delivery are the result of a positive feedback system (Figure 2).<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The first contractions of labor (the stimulus) push the baby toward the cervix (the lowest part of the uterus). The cervix contains stretch-sensitive nerve cells that monitor the degree of stretching (the sensors). These nerve cells send messages to the brain, which in turn causes the pituitary gland at the base of the brain (the [pb_glossary id=\"2438\"]control centre[\/pb_glossary]) to release the [pb_glossary id=\"2171\"]hormone[\/pb_glossary] oxytocin into the bloodstream. Oxytocin causes stronger contractions of the smooth muscles in of the uterus (the [pb_glossary id=\"2439\"]effectors[\/pb_glossary]), pushing the baby further down the birth canal. This causes even greater stretching of the cervix (the response). The cycle of stretching, oxytocin release, and increasingly more forceful contractions stops only when the baby is born. At this point, the stretching of the cervix halts, stopping the release of oxytocin.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"711\"]<img src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/dcbiol110311092nded\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/750\/2019\/07\/image4-8.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"711\" height=\"581\" \/> <strong>Figure 2. A positive feedback loop results in a change in the body\u2019s status, rather than a return to homeostasis.[\/caption]\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A second example of positive feedback centres on reversing extreme damage to the body. Following a penetrating wound, the most immediate threat is excessive blood loss. Less blood circulating means reduced blood pressure and reduced perfusion (penetration of blood) to the brain and other vital organs. If perfusion is severely reduced, vital organs will shut down and the person will die. The body responds to this potential catastrophe by releasing substances in the injured blood vessel wall that begin the process of blood clotting. As each step of clotting occurs, it stimulates the release of more clotting substances. This accelerates the processes of clotting and sealing off the damaged area. Clotting is contained in a local area based on the tightly controlled availability of clotting proteins. Within the human body, maintaining a healthy environment for living cells requires maintaining appropriate conditions in the <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2127\">extracellular fluids<\/a> \u2013 including the <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2129\">interstitial fluid<\/a> and blood <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2128\">plasma<\/a> \u2013 for each living cell to be able to function properly. The constancy of an internal environment is important in allowing chemical reactions to take place at rates necessary to maintain the body.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Conditions maintained by homeostasis<\/strong><strong><br style=\"clear: both\" \/><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">There are <strong>three<\/strong><strong> important conditions <\/strong>that must be met in order for the chemical reactions in the body to occur at the rates necessary for homeostasis. The first condition is that there must be a <strong>proper concentration of gases, nutrients, water and salts<\/strong>. The gases involved are oxygen, which is necessary for the process of <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2230\">cellular respiration<\/a> which produces energy for the body, and carbon dioxide, which is a waste product of this process, but also must be present in certain amounts for other processes to occur normally. Nutrients provide reactants, <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2173\">enzymes<\/a>, cofactors and energy for chemical reactions while water and salts determine the fluid balance, <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2134\">electrolyte<\/a> balance and the pH of the body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The second important condition for homeostasis is an <strong>optimum temperature <\/strong>that is about 37\u00b0C. The rates of chemical reactions are temperature dependent, occurring slower at cooler temperatures and faster at warmer temperatures. Additionally, the shapes of proteins (remember that proteins fulfill many roles in the body including providing structure, muscle contraction, and enzymatic function, among others) are temperature dependent &#8211; if they overheat they may dissociate and be rendered non-functional.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The third and final condition is an <strong>optimum pressure<\/strong>, for example, blood pressure. The concentrations of various substances in the body and the rates at which these substances move through the body are both dependent on blood pressure. Blood pressure is influenced by the volume of blood in the cardiovascular system, the diameter of the blood vessels and the strength of cardiac muscle contraction.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>The Internal Environment<\/strong><strong><br style=\"clear: both\" \/><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Homeostasis is maintained within the internal environment of the body. The human body is composed of cells surrounded by extracellular material which is mostly fluid. Cells are responsible for controlling bodily activities and also controlling the composition of the material that surrounds them. The <strong>internal environment<\/strong> is the environment in which cells are found and is thus defined as the fluid inside the body, but outside of cells.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The fluid inside the cells in the body is the <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2126\">intracellular fluid<\/a><\/strong>, also called cytoplasm (cytosol and the fluid inside organelles). Intracellular fluid makes up approximately 2\/3 of the total body fluids.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The fluid outside the cells in the body is the <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2127\">extracellular fluid<\/a><\/strong>. The internal environment is thus equivalent to the extracellular fluid. Extracellular fluid is found in blood (i.e. <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2128\">plasma<\/a>), in tissues (i.e. <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2129\">interstitial fluid<\/a>), in the lymphatic system (i.e. lymph), in joints (i.e. synovial fluid), in the eyes (i.e. aqueous and vitreous humors) and in the central nervous system (i.e cerebrospinal fluid). Extracellular fluid amounts to about 1\/3 of the fluids in the body as a whole.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The three main fluid types within the extracellular compartment are plasma, interstitial fluid and <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2138\">lymph<\/a>. <strong>Plasma<\/strong> is the liquid portion of blood and functions to move red and white blood cells, platelets, nutrient molecules, gases, electrolytes and wastes throughout the circulatory system. Materials are exchanged at capillary beds where the blood vessel walls are thin enough to allow materials to move between the blood and the tissues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The fluid that surrounds living cells within tissues is called <strong>interstitial fluid<\/strong>, which has a unique composition relative to both intracellular fluid and blood plasma. Components of plasma move into the <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2218\">tissues<\/a>, thus the interstitial fluid is partly derived from the plasma of blood. Interstitial fluid is also in contact with cells and is thus partly derived from the intracellular fluid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Interstitial fluid must be returned to the circulatory system in order to maintain appropriate pressure within the cardiovascular system and for waste materials from the cells to be removed. However, the interstitial fluid is under lower pressure than the plasma in the capillaries and so only 85% of the interstitial fluid is returned directly back to the circulatory system at the capillaries (mostly as a result of the osmotic gradient, the higher concentration of solutes inside the capillaries \u201csucks\u201d the water back in). The remaining 15% is returned indirectly through the vessels of another system called the lymphatic system. The fluid in these vessels, now called <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2138\">lymph<\/a><\/strong>, is derived from tissue fluid but is different from it in composition. Lymph is collected into larger lymphatic vessels that eventually drain into veins close to the heart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Although the extracellular and intracellular compartments are distinct from one another, there is a continual exchange of materials between them. Cells must receive nutrients, have waste materials taken away and exchange gases. Refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/dcbiol110311092nded\/chapter\/unit-5-cell-biol\u2026mbrane-transport\/\">Unit 5<\/a>, Cell Membrane Transport to review how substances move between intracellular and extracellular compartments.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Stressors<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A constant internal environment is not easily maintained. The internal environment is continually subjected to disturbances that unless counteracted, would quickly cause a new set of conditions in the body that could result in illness or death. A <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2435\">stressor<\/a><\/strong> is any stimulus that causes an imbalance in the internal environment. Stressors may be factors external to the body or from within the body itself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Examples of <strong>external stressors<\/strong> are a lack of environmental oxygen, which may occur at high altitudes or extreme environmental temperatures, such as excessive heat in a desert or excessive cold in the Arctic. Examples of <strong>internal stressors<\/strong> are rapid changes in blood pressure-hemorrhaging can cause a drop in pressure while unpleasant thoughts may raise blood pressure, or changes in levels of nutrients such as an increase or decrease in blood glucose levels.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Part 2: <\/strong><strong>Feedback loops<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Maintaining <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2264\">homeostasis<\/a> requires that the body continuously monitor its internal conditions. From body temperature to blood pressure to levels of certain nutrients, each physiological condition has a particular set point. A <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2436\">set point<\/a> <\/strong>is the physiological value around which the normal range fluctuates. A <strong>normal range <\/strong>is the restricted set of values that is optimally healthful and stable. For example, the set point for normal human body temperature is approximately 37\u00b0C (98.6\u00b0F), however, physiological body temperature tends to fluctuate within a few degrees above and below that set point depending on factors such as activity, digestive function, stress, etc. Control centres in the brain and other parts of the body monitor and react to deviations from homeostasis using negative feedback. <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2437\">Negative feedback<\/a> is <\/strong>a mechanism that reverses a deviation from the set point. Therefore, negative feedback maintains body parameters within their normal range. The maintenance of homeostasis by negative feedback goes on throughout the body at all times, and an understanding of negative feedback is thus fundamental to an understanding of human physiology.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Negative Feedback<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Feedback systems have five basic components (Figure 1). A <strong>sensor<\/strong>, also referred to a <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2270\">receptor<\/a>, detects when the <strong>stressor\/stimulus<\/strong> produces a deviation in a physiological value away from the set point. This change in value is reported to the control centre. The <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2438\">control centre<\/a><\/strong> is the component in a feedback system that compares the value to the normal range. If the value deviates too much from the set point, then the control centre activates an effector. An<strong> <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2439\">effector<\/a><\/strong> is the component in a feedback system that produces a <strong>response,<\/strong> which in the case of a negative feedback loop causes a return of the physiological value to its normal range.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 647px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/dcbiol110311092nded\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/750\/2019\/07\/image1-8.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"647\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Figure 1. (b) Body temperature is regulated by negative feedback.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">For example, in the control of blood glucose, specific <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2273\">endocrine<\/a> cells (<strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2270\">receptors<\/a><\/strong>) in the pancreas detect excess glucose (<strong>stimulus<\/strong>) in the bloodstream. These pancreatic beta cells (<strong>control <\/strong><strong>cen<\/strong><strong>tre<\/strong>) respond to the increased level of blood glucose by releasing the <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2171\">hormone<\/a> insulin into the bloodstream. The insulin signals skeletal muscle fibres, fat cells (<a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2305\">adipocytes<\/a>), and liver cells (<strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2439\">effectors<\/a><\/strong>) to take up the excess glucose (<strong>response<\/strong>), removing it from the bloodstream. As glucose concentration in the bloodstream drops, the decrease in concentration \u2014 the actual negative feedback (outcome) \u2014 is detected by pancreatic beta cells, and insulin release stops. This helps to prevent blood sugar levels from continuing to drop below the normal range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Humans have a similar temperature regulation feedback system that works by promoting either heat loss or heat gain (Figure 1b). When the brain\u2019s temperature regulation centre in the <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2440\">hypothalamus<\/a> receives data from the sensors indicating that the body\u2019s temperature exceeds its normal range, it stimulates a cluster of brain cells referred to as the thermoregulatory centre. This stimulation has three major effects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Blood vessels in the skin begin to <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2214\">dilate<\/a> allowing more blood from the body core to flow to the surface of the skin allowing the heat to radiate into the environment.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">As blood flow to the skin increases, sweat glands are activated to increase their output. As the sweat evaporates from the skin surface into the surrounding air, it takes heat with it.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">The depth of respiration increases, and a person may breathe through an open mouth instead of through the nasal passageways. This further increases heat loss from the lungs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In contrast, activation of the thermoregulatory centre by exposure to cold reduces blood flow to the skin, and blood returning from the limbs is diverted into a network of deep veins. This arrangement traps heat closer to the body core and restricts heat loss. If heat loss is severe, the <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2440\">hypothalamus<\/a> triggers an increase in random signals to skeletal muscles, causing them to contract and producing shivering. The muscle contractions of shivering release heat while using up ATP. The brain triggers the thyroid gland in the endocrine system to release thyroid hormone, which increases metabolic activity and heat production in cells throughout the body. The hypothalamus also signals the adrenal glands to release epinephrine (adrenaline), a hormone that causes the breakdown of glycogen into glucose, which can be used as an energy source. Positive feedback loops employ the same five basic components as <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2437\">negative feedback<\/a> loops, with the difference that a\u00a0deviation from the normal range results in more change, and the system moves farther away from the normal range. Positive feedback in the body is normal only when there is a definite end point. Childbirth, blood clotting and <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2442\">micturition<\/a> are some examples of physiological positive feedback loops (there are a number of other examples in immunity, in female reproductive cycles and at the level of cellular function).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Childbirth at full term is an example of a situation in which the maintenance of the existing body state is not desired. Enormous changes in the mother\u2019s body are required to expel the baby at the end of pregnancy. And the events of childbirth, once begun, must progress rapidly to a conclusion or the life of the mother and the baby are at risk. The extreme muscular work of labor and delivery are the result of a positive feedback system (Figure 2).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The first contractions of labor (the stimulus) push the baby toward the cervix (the lowest part of the uterus). The cervix contains stretch-sensitive nerve cells that monitor the degree of stretching (the sensors). These nerve cells send messages to the brain, which in turn causes the pituitary gland at the base of the brain (the <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2438\">control centre<\/a>) to release the <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2171\">hormone<\/a> oxytocin into the bloodstream. Oxytocin causes stronger contractions of the smooth muscles in of the uterus (the <a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_1340_2439\">effectors<\/a>), pushing the baby further down the birth canal. This causes even greater stretching of the cervix (the response). The cycle of stretching, oxytocin release, and increasingly more forceful contractions stops only when the baby is born. Following a penetrating wound, the most immediate threat is excessive blood loss. Less blood circulating means reduced blood pressure and reduced perfusion (penetration of blood) to the brain and other vital organs. If perfusion is severely reduced, vital organs will shut down and the person will die. The body responds to this potential catastrophe by releasing substances in the injured blood vessel wall that begin the process of blood clotting. As each step of clotting occurs, it stimulates the release of more clotting substances. This accelerates the processes of clotting and sealing off the damaged area. Clotting is contained in a local area based on the tightly controlled availability of clotting proteins.
