NOTE: LETS THROW EVERYTHING IN ONE BIG SECTION, WE CAN SEPARATE THEM LATER –> maybe section per chapter or something
In this appendix you will find a series of extra critical thinking questions that relate back to all the knowledge you have learned till this point, and they require you to apply the critical thinking skills and methods to solve them
Heart Failure chapter
- Compare the anatomy and function of the right and left sides of the heart. (editing note: leave as text)
- Guess some possible defects in the heart that could lead to diseases.
- Hint: they don’t have to be actual disease, don’t even name disease, just speculate. Eg. Hypertrophy on the left side of heart (the muscle tissue gets too large on the left side)
- Now that you learned about the normal anatomy of the Heart, what do you think would happen if the aortic valve doesn’t work properly (a. It has problem opening, b. it doesn’t close fully, c. it is narrow)? What would happen to the volume of the blood in the heart due to this change?
- Hint for second part of the question: try thinking about what would the effect be on cardiac output (i.e. volume ejected into the arteries)? The leftover volume after systole (i.e. end systolic volume)? To preload (i.e. volume filling the ventricle).
- Guess some possible defects in the heart that could lead to diseases.
- What respiratory changes (if any) would someone with L-sided heart failure experience? How does this compare with R-sided heart failure? Are these difference enough for you to make a “diagnosis”?
- Which would have a greater impact on overall perfusion of the body: concentric vs eccentric hypertrophy?

Emphysema chapter Qs
- Organs and Structures of the Respiratory System
- What might happen if the respiratory membrane thickens? Identify an organ system that might be affected by this and how.
- Propose some other changes to the blood-air barrier that may hinder gas exchange.
- Where are some other areas in the body that pseudostratified ciliated epithelium might be found?
- The Process of Breathing
- Describe a scenario in which forced breathing would be advantageous.
- Describe a scenario in which forced breathing would be disadvantageous.
- Aside from spirometry, what other diagnostic tests might be used to test for respiratory disorders?
- Explain how weight and lifestyle contributes to the development of sleep apnea.
- Inflammation and Fever
- How do you think anti-inflammatory drugs work?
- Propose how the following factors may affect the body’s inflammatory response:
- a) Age
- b) Immunodeficiency
- c) Socioeconomic status
- Pathophysiology of Emphysema
- What might happen with a protease deficiency?
- What might happen with excessive AAT production? Propose a cause of excessive AAT production.
- Where else in the body might AAT be used?
- What are some advantages and disadvantages of a Gough preparation?
Cirrhosis chapter Qs
- The normal liver and gallbladder
- What happens if the hepatocytes lose their ability to store excess lipids, carbohydrates, and amino acids?
- How are you able to live without your gallbladder?
- Mr. Vasquez is a 38-year-old man who recently underwent surgery to have his gallbladder removed. What are some lifestyle changes that he would have to make following his surgery?
- Would Mr. Vasquez’s susceptibility for the following conditions increase, decrease, or stay the same? Explain.
- Diabetes
- Cancer
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Would Mr. Vasquez’s susceptibility for the following conditions increase, decrease, or stay the same? Explain.
