Learning Objectives
By the end of this section you will be able to:
- Define and provide examples of each of the following: Pathogenicity (virulence), Virulence Factors, Infectious and Lethal Dose, Primary and Opportunistic Pathogens, Portals of Entry and Exit, Disease Transmission, Endotoxins, Exotoxins, Adhesins, Antigenic Variation
- Describe virulence factors that are unique to bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and helminths.
- Briefly discuss the stages of pathogenesis that ensues upon infection as a result of each virulence factor.
- Compare different endotoxins, exotoxins, adhesins as well as means of microbial motility and transmission.
*Action item – Zoë (will complete this section)
In this section, we will define the following terms and provide examples of each:
- Pathogenicity (virulence), Virulence Factors
- Infectious and Lethal Dose
- Primary and Opportunistic Pathogens
- Portals of Entry and Exit, Disease Transmission
- Endotoxins, Exotoxins, Adhesins, Antigenic Variation
Following this, we will:
a) describe virulence factors that are unique to bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and helminths.
b) briefly discuss the stages of pathogenesis that ensues upon infection as a result of each virulence factor.
c) compare different endotoxins, exotoxins, adhesins as well as means of microbial motility and transmission.
