Learning Objectives

By the end of this section you will be able to:

  • List the innate defenses of the integumentary system that provide protection against microbial infection.
  • Identify the most common bacterial, viral, fungal, protozoan, and helminthic pathogens that cause skin infections.
  • Describe the signs and symptoms associated with skin infections.
  • Discuss risk factors, typical diagnostic tests and treatments used to counteract skin infections.
