Participants honor each other\u2019s experiences and opinions with respect to achieve a place of<br \/>\nunderstanding, acknowledging that there may be a certain level of discomfort when discussing uncomfortable comments. <\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-colonial\">colonial<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>the control or governing influence of a nation over a dependent country, territory, or people.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-colonialism\">colonialism<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-complex-systems\">Complex systems<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Complex systems have unknown unknowns, so you don\u2019t know the framework or the variables. The cause &amp; effect relationships aren\u2019t repeated, and the system is only coherent in retrospect.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-complicated\">Complicated<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>definition<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-complicated-systems\">Complicated systems<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Complicated systems have known unknowns, like a large system of equations that can be only solved with a matrix. In this case, the cause &amp; effect relationships are separated by space &amp; time. You can utilize systems thinking to solve these systems.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-comprehensive-community-plan-ccp\">comprehensive community plan (CCP)<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>a detailed plan created by and for a First Nations community with the purpose of creating community guidelines on (Government of Canada, 2016)<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-decolonization\">Decolonization<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Decolonization is the process of deconstructing the superiority associated with colonial ideologies and western methods of acquiring knowledge to help create space for Indigenization.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-descriptive\">descriptive<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Relating to what can directly be observed<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-elders\">elders<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>a leader or senior figure in a tribe or other group<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-empirical\">Empirical<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Originating in or based on observation or experience<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-engagement\">engagement<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>an effort to understand someone or something<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-first-nations\">First Nations<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>First Nations is a term used to describe Indigenous peoples in Canada (sometimes referred to as Aboriginal peoples) who are not M\u00e9tis or Inuit<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-hot-button-moment\">hot button moment<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\"><\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-hot-button-moments\">hot button moments<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Instances where people's feelings rise (sometimes unexpectedly) to a point that threatens teaching and learning.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-ideologies\">ideologies<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>a system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-indigenization\">Indigenization<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>The process of incorporating Indigenous \u201cways of knowing\u201d, ways of learning, technology, guiding principles and knowledge systems into our schools, businesses, governments and institutions.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-indigenize\">Indigenize<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>bring (something) under the control, dominance, or influence of the people native to an area.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-indigenous-peoples\">Indigenous Peoples<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Indigenous Peoples are distinct social and cultural groups that share collective ancestral ties to the lands and natural resources where they live, occupy or from which they have been displaced<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-microaggressions\">Microaggressions<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Microaggressions are brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, and environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial, gender, sexual orientation, and religious slights and insults to the target person or group<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-neocolonial\">neocolonial<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>relating to or characterized by the use of economic, political, cultural, or other pressures to control or influence other countries<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-observable\">observable<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\"><\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-postcolonialism\">Postcolonialism<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Postcolonialism refers to the study of a region or culture after colonization has occurred<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-prescriptive\">Prescriptive<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Relating to what should or ought to happen<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-reconciliation\">reconciliation<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>the action of making one view or belief compatible with another<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-safe-space\">Safe Space<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A space that poses to threat of danger, risk, or harm to those within the space.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt solvable. For example, the equation of a line with a known x or y value is solvable.
