Dr. Ron Buckmire

Time period: Modern (53 years old)

Subject: Physics, Math, and STEM Education

Biography: Ron Buckmire was born in May of 1968 in Grenville, Grenada. He spent his childhood in the US and his high school years in Barbados. He holds a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and a PhD in Mathematics. His research and contributions have included work in STEM education, Mathematics, and Physics. Dr. Buckmire is both Black and gay and is an LGBTQ+2S activist.

Summary of their contributions: Dr. Buckmire has made extensive contributions both in Math and Physics. His research focuses on error analysis, Taylor expansion, boundary value problems, and other mathematics research areas. Applications of his contributions reach far beyond math, including to Physics concepts including heat, thermodynamics, and dynamics. In addition to his work in STEM, Dr. Buckmire has contributed to scientific research on education including involvement of LGBT+2S in STEM.

Integration with the BC Secondary Science Curriculum: In the Physics 12 curriculum one of the content objectives is to teach about graphical methods in Physics, including analyzing regressions, and error. Many high-school Physics students would describe this as a closed area of research, that we know all we need to know about analyzing graphs, functions, and derivatives. Dr. Buckmire’s research proves that this is not the case as he explores how our understanding of even the most fundamental derivatives could still improve. He also explores how we analyze error and make approximations suggesting changes to concepts as fundamental as the numerical expansions we use in Magnetism. Beyond error analysis, Dr. Buckmire’s research has applications to fluid dynamics, the heat equation, dynamics, kinematics, and even extends beyond the Science classroom to the Calculus that is taught in high school.
