Natural Resources and Environment

Biography:

Dr. Ho Thi Thanh Van is an Associate Professor working at Ho Chi Minh City University of Natural Resources and Environment as the Environment Head of R&D and External Relations. She received her PhD in Chemical Engineering at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology in 2011. As the head of her department, Dr. Van Thi Thanh Ho is focused on her research in the synthesis of new materials and nanostructures and their applications to green energy and environmental science. While Dr. Van feels the many barriers regarding funding and lack of equipment, she does not allow that to discourage her passion for scientific research and serving her community.

Summary of their contributions:

Dr. Ho Thi Thanh Van has earned many awards in the field of Natural Resources and Environment and most recently received the L’Oréal-UNESCO International Rising Talent Award in 2022 for her work in the development of new materials when producing green hydrogen. Dr. Van believes that the development of these materials is essential as fossil fuels are a finite source of energy. To promote her research, she has published over 90 articles in both domestic and international journals and worked on ten major projects. In 2021 Dr. Van  and her team began a project focused on CO2 capture by creating artificial leaves based on MgO-based nanomaterials. The group sees immense potential in reducing CO2 greenhouse gas at a higher efficiency than natural plants, with less maintenance, and the potential to repurpose the CO2 in industry.

Integration with the BC Secondary Science Curriculum:

Dr. Van’s work can be incorporated into the BC Secondary Science Curriculum within units on environmental science and renewable energy. When teaching about sustainable practices and renewable energy sources, Dr. Van’s research can be incorporated as modern-day progressions in the field of solar, hydrogen fuel cells and energy efficient substitutions.

Dr. Van’s work is most suited for studies in Environmental Science 11 and 12 as she has projects in water purification, disposal of toxic and volatile compounds, CO2 capture, solar energy, green hydrogen, and waste management which may serve as content or project based research topics.
