He began astronaut training in February 1984 and served as backup payload specialist to <span lang=\"fr\">Marc Garneau<\/span> for the October 1984 Space Shuttle Mission <span class=\"nowrap\"><abbr title=\"Space Transport System\">STS<\/abbr>-41G<\/span>.\r\n\r\n<strong>Space flight experience:<\/strong>\r\n\r\nIn June and July 1996, Bob flew as a payload specialist aboard Space Shuttle\u00a0Mission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/missions\/sts-078.asp\"><span class=\"nowrap\"><abbr title=\"Space Transport System\">STS<\/abbr>-78<\/span><\/a>, the Life and Microgravity Spacelab (<abbr>LMS<\/abbr>) mission.\r\n\r\nIn 2009 Bob became the first Canadian astronaut to go on a long-duration expedition aboard the <abbr title=\"International Space Station\">ISS<\/abbr>. He and two crewmates launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on May 27 aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.
