Incorporating monthly changing patterns of contaminant concentrations into Ecotracer is a three\u2010step process: 1) Prepare maps in a GIS; 2) define external data connections in EwE; and 3) connect an external data connection to drive the contents of the Ecospace contaminants layer.\r\n<h1>Prepare Maps in a GIS<\/h1>\r\nAlthough the <a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/eweguide\/chapter\/spatial%e2%80%90temporal-data-framework\/\">STDF<\/a> contains a GIS engine that converts GIS data to the Ecospace grid (Steenbeek et al. [footnote]Steenbeek, J., Coll, M., Gurney, L., M\u00e9lin, F., Hoepffner, N., Buszowski, J., Christensen, V., 2013. Bridging the gap between ecosystem modeling tools and geographic information systems: Driving a food web model with external spatial\u2013temporal data. Ecological Modelling 263, 139\u2013151. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.ecolmodel.2013.04.027\">https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.ecolmodel.2013.04.027<\/a>[\/footnote]), it is highly recommended that ecosystem modellers perform this step in a dedicated GIS software to minimize GIS processing artifacts.\r\n\r\nThe step to prepare maps in a GIS entails the necessary steps to convert contaminant distributions over time into discrete, monthly ESRI ASCII maps that match the exact dimensions, cell size, spatial extent, and geospatial projection of the base map in an Ecospace scenario.\r\n\r\nThe Ecospace base map can be extracted from a loaded Ecospace scenario as follows:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Click Navigator &gt; Ecospace &gt; Input &gt; Maps<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Double\u2010click the Depth layer at the right\u2010most panel<\/li>\r\n \t<li>In the Edit layer\u00a0interface that appears, select the Data tab. In the Data tab, select Export &gt; To ASCII\u2026<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nThe actual steps to convert contaminant distributions to monthly Ecospace maps can require a number of GIS operations, depending on the format and content of the original contaminant data. Operations may require:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Reprojecting to the Ecospace base map (most likely WGS84 \/ epsg:4326)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Temporal clustering<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Clipping<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Kriging (point data) and\/or resampling (vector data)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Exporting to the ESRI ASCII format.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h1>Define External Data Connections in EwE<\/h1>\r\nOnce one or more time series of monthly ASCII maps have been prepared, Ecospace needs to know where to find these time series on the local machine. Do the following,\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Click Menu &gt; Ecospace &gt; Define external data connections\u2026\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_890\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"542\"]<img class=\"wp-image-890 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/eweguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2056\/2023\/10\/SpatTempFW_manual-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"542\" height=\"477\" \/> <strong>Figure 1<\/strong><i> - <\/i>To define a new spatial\u2010temporal data connection, select the type of the connection and click . From this interface one can also reconfigure external data connections that were previously created.[\/caption]<\/li>\r\n \t<li>In the Define external data connections interface, select connection type A series of Ecospace ASCII maps over time\u00a0and click Create (Figure 1). Each time series has a name to uniquely define the series in the Ecopath with Ecosim user interface, an optional description, a variable that only serves to limit where the external data connection appears in the Ecopath with Ecosim user interface, and a series of timetagged maps that, in this particular figure, reflects historical concentrations of 137Cs in the water off of Fukushima, at monthly time steps, since March 2011.[\/caption]<\/li>\r\n \t<li>In the Configure external data\u00a0interface, enter a unique name to identify the time series in the Ecopath with Ecosim user interface.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>It is advisable to use the description to describe where the maps time series came from.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The variable field serves to limit where the external data connection appears in the EwE user interface. For contaminants, leave this field at its default value (No variable).<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Now add the actual maps to the external data connection. Click Browse and navigate the folder that contains the maps. Select all the maps, and click Open. The maps will appear in the Configure external data\u00a0interface.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>This interface has limited abilities to parse the date from map file names. Please check the Time column and ensure that each map has a correct time tag. You can modify time tags by hand, or with the tools provided in the Set file times\u00a0section.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Once all maps are correctly time\u2010tagged, close the Configure external data. The newly configured time series of external maps will appear in the Define external data connections\u00a0interface.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Close this interface too.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nEcospace now has the information to locate and integrate time series of external ASCII contaminant maps into the running model.\r\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400\">Connect the External Data to the Contaminants Layer<\/h2>\r\nNow at least one time series of contaminants in seawater has been defined, this time series needs to be connected to drive the contents of the Ecospace contaminants map layer.
