Learning Objectives

After studying this section, students should be able to:

  • Understand the responsibilities of a sponsor employer to a trade apprentice
  • List primary criteria in determining whether a trades worker is an independent contractor or an employee
  • Recognize the administration and paperwork needed for a new sponsored employer
  • Know basic employment rights
  • Be able to review all parts of a regular paystub and recalculate for any discrepancies
  • Recognize certain items common on union paystubs, and indicate which items have tax implications
  • List examples of common taxable benefits to a trades worker
  • Track and reconcile timesheet records to paycheck hours
  • Track and reconcile timesheet records to recorded work-based apprenticeship hours
  • Have a repertoire of steps to take when there is a shortage of work
