Chapitre 0 – Bienvenue !
Compréhension Orale
The Compréhension Orale section of each chapter is a way for you to test your listening comprehension skills and improve them. It is also a way to experience French vocabulary through real-world examples. In this section, you will learn new songs, meet Francophones and Francophiles and hopefully have fun doing so.
Play the video to meet a Francophone and Francophile. The video will pause every time there is a listening comprehension question. These questions are meant to challenge you and check your comprehension. You may slow down the recording by using the gauge on the bottom right-hand side of the player. To enlarge the video, select the diagonal arrows on the bottom right of the player. Bonne rencontre!
Let’s get to know Bea and Reda
Let’s sing
Allez! Une chanson!
If you have studied French before, what are the main things you remember? Foux da fafa is by a group from New Zealand called Flight of the Conchords. The song is a parody on words and expressions that students typically learn in introductory French courses. As you listen, see how much of the song you are already able to understand.
Note: the members of this group are not native French speakers, so their grammar and pronunciation are not always correct!
Flight of the Conchords is a folk, pop, and comedy band that bills itself as “formerly New Zealand’s fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk comedy folk duo.” The group uses a combination of witty observation, characterization, and acoustic guitars to wow its audience.
The duo’s comedy and music became the basis of a BBC radio series and then, an American television series, which premiered in 2007 on HBO.
Play the video to listen to the song. It will pause every time there is a listening comprehension question. These questions are meant to challenge you and check your comprehension. You may slow down the recording by using the gauge on the bottom right-hand side of the player. Bonne écoute! [Allez une chanson!]
