(They have some caf\u00e9 au laits.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"box-note\">\r\n<div class=\"mt-section\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h3 class=\"box-legend lt-human-107975 editable\"><span class=\"lt-icon-default\">Note<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107975\">The liaison in the the phrases <strong>nous avons<\/strong> (we have) and <strong>ils ont<\/strong> (they have) sounds like a \/<strong>z<\/strong>\/. If you pronounce this liaison like an \/<strong>s<\/strong>\/, then a listener will think you are saying <strong>nous savons<\/strong> (we know) or <strong>ils sont<\/strong> (they are). Pronunciation matters! More on this later.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107975\">(c) When you have something, you usually say <strong>j'ai...<\/strong> followed by an article and a noun. There are exceptions (like <strong>J'ai cours<\/strong>), but this is generally true. For example: <strong>j'ai un crayon<\/strong> (I have a pencil) or <strong>il a le livre<\/strong> (He has the book). When you negate it, you say <strong>je n'ai pas de<\/strong> without any article. For example: <strong>Je n'ai pas de crayon(s)<\/strong> Compare:<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107975\">Il a <strong>un<\/strong> examen aujourd'hui. (He has an exam today.)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107975\">Il n'a pas <strong>d'<\/strong>examen aujourd'hui. (He doesn't have an exam today.)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107975\">J'ai <strong>un<\/strong> cours tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressant. (I have an interesting class.)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107975\">Je n'ai pas <strong>de<\/strong> cours int\u00e9ressant. (I don't have an interesting class.)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107975\">Notice how this is similar to the negation of <strong>il y a<\/strong> (see above): il y a un cours vs. il n'y a pas de cours.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107975\">(d) There are numerous idiomatic expressions based on the verbe <strong>avoir<\/strong>. For example, to ask someone\u2019s age, you say <strong>Quel \u00e2ge as-tu ?
