When a verb is not conjugated it does not have a subject that is performing the action. This is called the infinitive form (e.g., \u00e9tudier<\/strong>, aimer<\/strong>).<\/p>\r\n

To make infinitives in English we place the word to in front of verb: \"to study, to like, to walk, to dream\", etc. The infinitives of most French words end in -er<\/strong>: \u00e9tudier<\/strong>, aimer<\/strong>, marcher<\/strong>, r\u00eaver<\/strong>, etc. These are called \"regular -er verbs.\"<\/p>\r\n

To conjugate a regular -er<\/strong> verb, you need to identify the stem (la racine<\/strong> or le radical<\/strong>) and the ending (la terminaison<\/strong>) as follows:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

To conjugate a verb, you must replace the ending (-er<\/strong>) with one that corresponds to the subject. There are six present tense endings specific to -er<\/strong> verbs: -e<\/strong>, -es<\/strong>, -e<\/strong>, -ons<\/strong>, -ez<\/strong>, -ent<\/strong>. The following table conjugates the regular -er<\/strong> verbs aimer<\/strong> (to like) and \u00e9tudier<\/strong> (to study).<\/p>\r\n
