For example, you can turn statements like <strong>Tu aimes le Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong> (You like Quebec) and <strong>Tu manges<\/strong> (You eat) into questions like this :<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Est-ce que tu aimes<\/strong> le Qu\u00e9bec ? <strong>Aimes-tu<\/strong> le Qu\u00e9bec ?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Est-ce que tu manges <\/strong>les petits pois ? <strong>Manges-tu <\/strong>les petits pois ?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">Then you add the interrogative to them, for example:<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Pourquoi<\/strong> est-ce que tu aimes le Qu\u00e9bec ? <strong>Pourquoi<\/strong> aimes-tu le Qu\u00e9bec ?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Quand<\/strong> est-ce que tu manges ? <strong>Quand<\/strong> manges-tu ?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>O\u00f9<\/strong> est-ce que tu manges ? <strong>O\u00f9<\/strong> manges-tu ?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Qu'<\/strong>est-ce que tu manges ? <strong>Que<\/strong> manges-tu ?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">You may also add an interrogative word to a question formed by a change in intonation, but only in certain cases:<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Pourquoi<\/strong> tu aimes le Qu\u00e9bec ? <strong>Quand <\/strong>tu manges ? <strong>O\u00f9<\/strong> tu manges ?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">(b) When the question word <strong>qui<\/strong> (who) is the subject of the sentence, it is followed directly by the verb:<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Qui<\/strong> mange au Resto U ? (Who eats at the cafeteria?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Qui<\/strong> n'aime pas chanter ? (Who doesn't like to sing?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">When <strong>qui<\/strong> is not the object of a sentence (whom), it is followed by <strong>est-ce que<\/strong> or inversion:<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Qui est-ce que<\/strong> tu regardes ? (Whom are you looking at?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Qui<\/strong> regardes-tu ? (Whom are you looking at?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">(c) <strong>Quand<\/strong> (when) is used to ask about the day and the date, while <strong>\u00c0 quelle heure<\/strong> is only used to ask about the time.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\">\u2014 <strong>Quand<\/strong> est-ce que le cours commence ?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\">\u2014 Il commence le 20 ao\u00fbt.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\">\u2014 <strong>\u00c0 quelle heure<\/strong> est-ce que cours commence ?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\">\u2014 Il commence \u00e0 15h30.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">(d) A very common way to formulate a question is to place the interrogative word at the end of the sentence.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\">Tu t'appelles <strong>comment\u00a0<\/strong>? (What's your name?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\">Tu habites <strong>o\u00f9\u00a0<\/strong>? (Where do you live?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\">Il en a <strong>combien\u00a0<\/strong>? (How many does he have?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">(e) <strong>Quoi<\/strong> is different from <strong>que, qu'<\/strong>. In order to use it with <strong>est-ce que<\/strong> or inversion, it must be preceded by a preposition (<strong>\u00e0, de<\/strong>). Otherwise, you can just add it to the end.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>\u00c0 quoi<\/strong> penses-tu ? (What are you thinking about?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\">Tu \u00e9tudies <strong>quoi ? <\/strong>(What are you studying?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>De quoi<\/strong> parlez-vous ? (What are you guys talking about?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\">Tu \u00e9coutes\u00a0<strong>quoi\u00a0<\/strong>? (What are you listening to?)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"box-note\">\r\n<div class=\"mt-section\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h3 class=\"box-legend lt-human-107978 editable\"><span class=\"lt-icon-default\">Note<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">Notice that <strong>pourquoi<\/strong> is formed by adding the preposition <strong>pour<\/strong> (for) to the word <strong>quoi<\/strong> (what), like saying for what or what for.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\"><strong>Quoi<\/strong> is different from <strong>qu'est-ce que<\/strong> because it goes at the end, while <strong>qu'est-ce que<\/strong> goes at the beginning.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Qu'est-ce que<\/strong> c'est ?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\">C'est <strong>quoi <\/strong>?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">(f) When you don't understand what someone is saying to you, you simply say: <strong>Comment\u00a0<\/strong>? (What? I beg your pardon?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">(g) The interrogative word <strong>quel<\/strong> (what or which) is a special case because it is an adjective and therefore\u00a0must agree with the gender and number of the noun it modifies.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Quel<\/strong> jour sommes-nous ? (Which day is it?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Quels<\/strong> films aimes-tu ? (What movies do you like?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\">Tu es de <strong>quelle<\/strong> origine ? (What\u2019s your origin?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Quelles<\/strong> filles vont \u00e0 la soir\u00e9e ? (Which girls are going to the party?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">Some uses of <strong>quel<\/strong> will require a preposition as well:<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>De quelle<\/strong> couleur est-elle la voiture ? (What color is the car?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>\u00c0 quelle<\/strong> heure est la soir\u00e9e ? (At what time is the party?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">(h) <strong>Qu'est ce que<\/strong> vs. <strong>quel<\/strong>. They both ask what, but they are different. Compare:<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Quel<\/strong> est ton num\u00e9ro de t\u00e9l\u00e9phone ? (What is your telephone number?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Qu'est-ce que<\/strong> tu vas manger ? (What are you going to eat?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Quelles<\/strong> amies invites-tu ? (What friends are you inviting?)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\"><strong>Qu'est-ce <\/strong><strong>qu'<\/strong>il \u00e9tudie ? (What is he studying?)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"box-note\">\r\n<div class=\"mt-section\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h3 class=\"box-legend lt-human-107978 editable\"><span class=\"lt-icon-default\">Note<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">Notice how <strong>quel<\/strong> is asking for specific information about a noun (i.e., <strong>num\u00e9ro de t\u00e9l\u00e9phone<\/strong>, <strong>amies<\/strong>), while <strong>Qu'est-ce que<\/strong> is asking about the object of the verb (<strong>manger<\/strong>).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">(i) When someone asks you <strong>pourquoi\u00a0<\/strong>? (why), you reply with <strong>parce que<\/strong> (because):<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\">\u2014 <strong>Pourquoi<\/strong> est-ce que tu \u00e9tudies la chimie et la biologie ?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\">\u2014 <strong>Parce que<\/strong> j'aime les sciences !<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">(j) It is important to remember that the formation of questions is first and foremost about social norms, not grammatical rules. The social situation you are in will determine how you form a question. For example, in writing you will use more inversion. In a more casual setting you will ask Comment tu t'appelles ? (intonation) but in a slightly less casual situation you will say <strong>Comment t'appelles-tu ?<\/strong> (inversion). With a friend you may ask, <strong>Tu fais quoi ?<\/strong> (What are you doing?), but with a stranger you'll say <strong>Qu'est-ce que vous faites ? Or Que faites-vous ?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"box-definition\">\r\n<div class=\"mt-section\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h3 class=\"box-legend lt-human-104348 editable\"><span (why), you reply with <strong>parce que<\/strong> (because):<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\">\u2014 <strong>Pourquoi<\/strong> est-ce que tu \u00e9tudies la chimie et la biologie ?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-107978\">\u2014 <strong>Parce que<\/strong> j&#8217;aime les sciences !<\/p>\n<p class=\"lt-human-107978\">(j) It is important to remember that the formation of questions is first and foremost about social norms, not grammatical rules. The social situation you are in will determine how you form a question. For example, in writing you will use more inversion. In a more casual setting you will ask Comment tu t&#8217;appelles ? (intonation) but in a slightly less casual situation you will say <strong>Comment t&#8217;appelles-tu ?<\/strong> (inversion). With a friend you may ask, <strong>Tu fais quoi ?<\/strong> (What are you doing?), but with a stranger you&#8217;ll say <strong>Qu&#8217;est-ce que vous faites ?
