In French, however, it is used all the time and sounds normal:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-109196\">the friend of John (<strong>L'ami de John<\/strong>)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-109196\">the house of Janet (<strong>La maison de Janet<\/strong>)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-109196\">the king of the mountain (<strong>Le roi de la montagne<\/strong>)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-109196\">In this context, <strong>de<\/strong> roughly translates to the English -<strong>'s<\/strong> (as in John's car).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-109196\">le fr\u00e8re <strong>de<\/strong> Michel (Michel's brother)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-109196\">le voisin <strong>de<\/strong> M. (It's your class.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-109196\">You can also express associations and relationships with possessive adjectives:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-109196\">C'est <strong>mon<\/strong> oncle. (It's my uncle.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-109196\">Ce sont <strong>mes<\/strong> cousins. (Is that your teacher?)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-109196\">In English possessive adjective agrees with the subject (his sister, her brother). For example, son means two different things in the following sentences:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-109196\">Oui, elle a <strong>son<\/strong> livre. (Yes, she has her book.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-109196\">Non, il n'a pas <strong>son<\/strong> livre. (No, he doesn't have his book.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-109196\">J'aime bien <strong>cette l\u00e9gende<\/strong>, mais je ne connais pas <strong>son<\/strong> origine. (I like that legend, but I don't know its origin.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-109196\">(iii) <strong>Notre<\/strong>, <strong>votre<\/strong>, and <strong>leur<\/strong> modify singular nouns, regardless of gender. (They are our friends.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-109196\">\u2b27 When a feminine singular noun starts with a vowel or silent h you must use the masculine mon, ton, and son:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-109196\">Elle est <strong>mon<sub>n<\/sub><\/strong>amie. (She is my friend.) [<strong>amie <\/strong>is feminine, but begins with a vowel]<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-109196\"><strong>Ton<sub>n<\/sub><\/strong>\u00e9criture est jolie. (Your writing is nice.) [<strong>\u00e9criture<\/strong> is feminine, but begins with a vowel]<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-109196\">(c) You can also use the possesive <strong>\u00e0<\/strong> to show belonging and ownership in French, usually in the form of <strong>c'est<\/strong> + [noun] + <strong>\u00e0<\/strong> + [owner]:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-109196\">C'est un ami <strong>\u00e0<\/strong> moi. (He's a friend of mine.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-109196\">C'est la voiture <strong>\u00e0<\/strong> B\u00e9atrice. (It's Beatrice's car.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-109196\">C'est <strong>\u00e0<\/strong> moi. (It's mine.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-109196\">(d) A final way to show possession is to use possessive pronouns in place of nouns to indicate to whom or to what those nouns belong. For example. In English my house can be replaced with the possesive pronoun mine. In French, this would be: <strong>ma maison<\/strong> (my house) <strong>\u2794 la mienne<\/strong> (mine).
