Just like with faire<\/strong>, there are many different idiomatic expressions with the verb avoir<\/strong>. We already used one to talk about age:<\/p>\r\n

J'ai<\/strong> 14 ans. (I am fourteen years old.)<\/p>\r\n

Il a<\/strong> 40 ans. (He is 40 years old.)<\/p>\r\n

Notice how avoir<\/strong> translates to \u201cto be\u201d in English. In French you \"have\" 14 years. In English you \"are\" 14 years old. There is another example of how we cannot simply rely on word by word translations without taking the entire context into account.<\/p>\r\n

We have learned how to use the verb \u00eatre<\/strong> with adjectives to describe people and things (e.g., Jean est heureux<\/strong>, Maya est int\u00e9ressante<\/strong>). In French, there are some expressions with avoir<\/strong> to describe a person's state of being. Let's look at some common avoir<\/strong> expressions in French.<\/p>\r\n
