For example: \"You are happy. You guys are happy.\"<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"lt-human-104354\">In the 3rd person, the speaker is talking about someone else who is usually absent from the conversation: \"She is happy. They are happy.\"<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<div class=\"box-note\">\r\n<div class=\"mt-section\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h4 class=\"box-legend lt-human-104354 editable\"><span class=\"lt-icon-default\">Note<\/span><\/h4>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li class=\"lt-human-104354\"><strong>Vous<\/strong> can be singular as a formal way of saying you to one person, or it can be the plural you (y'all) as both a formal and informal way of addressing more than one person.<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"lt-human-104354\"><strong>Ce<\/strong> is a neutral (or impersonal) pronoun that can be translated to English as it, this or that. For example: <strong>Ce n'est pas un crayon<\/strong> (<strong>This<\/strong> is not a pencil). We saw this above in <strong>c'est<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"lt-human-104354\"><strong>On<\/strong> can mean one or you in an impersonal way, like In Paris one eats baguettes or In Paris you eat baguettes, where you means anyone visiting or living in Paris. In most French dialects, <strong>on<\/strong> is used instead of <strong>nous<\/strong> in everyday conversation. Thus, the sentence, <strong>En France, on aime manger du pain<\/strong> could mean <strong>In France, WE like to eat bread <\/strong>or <strong>In France, ONE likes to eat bread.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"lt-human-104354\">Il, elle, ils, elles. These pronouns don't have to refer to people. For example, <strong>la soir\u00e9e<\/strong> (the party) = <strong>elle<\/strong> (it); <strong>le fromage<\/strong> (the cheese) = <strong>il<\/strong> (it); <strong>les livres<\/strong> (the books) = ils (they); <strong>les r\u00e8gles<\/strong> (the rules) = <strong>elles<\/strong> (they).<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div id=\"section_3\" class=\"mt-section\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h3 class=\"editable\">Nous vs. on<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-104354\"><strong>Nous <\/strong>always means \"we\" or \"us\". <strong>On<\/strong>, however, can change meaning:<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">(a) <strong>On \u2260 nous. On<\/strong> can be an impersonal pronoun like \"one\", or \"you\" in English. For example:<strong> On mange beaucoup de fromage en France <\/strong>(One eats a lot of cheese in France)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">OR<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">(b) <strong>On = nous. On<\/strong> can mean <strong>nous <\/strong>(we).<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>For example:<strong> On mange beaucoup de fromage en France <\/strong>(We eat a lot of cheese in France)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div id=\"section_4\" class=\"mt-section\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h4 class=\"editable\"><strong>On \u2260 Nous<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-104354\"><strong>On <\/strong>can mean \"one\" or \"you\" in an impersonal way. For example:<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">\u00c0 Paris, <strong>on<\/strong> mange des baguettes (In Paris <strong>one <\/strong>eats baguettes -or- In Paris <strong>you <\/strong>eat baguettes [Because it's what you do in Paris!])<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-104354\">*Notice how in English we often use the pronoun <strong>you<\/strong> as an impersonal pronoun, where <strong>you <\/strong>means \"anyone\" visiting or living in Paris. It is \"impersonal\" because it is not referring to a specific person or group of individuals - just people in general.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div id=\"section_5\" class=\"mt-section\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h4 class=\"editable\"><strong>On = Nous<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-104354\">The subject pronoun <strong>o<\/strong><strong>n<\/strong> is often used in place of <strong>nous<\/strong> to express \"we\". In fact, in most French dialects, people use <strong>on<\/strong> more than <strong>nous<\/strong> in everyday conversation. For example:<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">Claire et moi, <strong>on<\/strong> aime le chocolat. (Claire and I, <strong>we<\/strong> love chocolate.)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\"><strong>On<\/strong> est tr\u00e8s fatigu\u00e9s. (<strong>We<\/strong> are really tired.)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\"><strong>On<\/strong> y va ! (Let<strong>'s<\/strong> go!)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-104354\">Always remember: context is everything! For example, the following sentence could mean two different things:<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">En France <strong>on<\/strong> aime manger du pain<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">It could mean:<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-2 lt-human-104354\">(1) In France we like to eat bread. [<strong>On<\/strong> = my friends and I = <strong>we<\/strong>]<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-2 lt-human-104354\">(2) In France one likes to eat bread. [<strong>On<\/strong> = people in general = <strong>one<\/strong>]<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-2 lt-human-104354\">In these examples, you can see how the line almost blurs between \"we\" and \"one\" when you speak in generalities.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-104354\">In everyday speech, you want to get used to saying <strong>on<\/strong> instead of <strong>nous<\/strong>. In my experience, people rarely ever say <strong>nous<\/strong> unless it's for clarification. Here are some examples.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">On est mari\u00e9s. = Nous sommes mari\u00e9s. (We are married.)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">On est am\u00e9ricains. = Nous sommes am\u00e9ricains. (We are American.)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">On est tr\u00e8s contents. = Nous sommes contents. (We are very happy.)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"lt-human-104354\"><strong>Attention<\/strong>: Even though <strong>On<\/strong> is grammatically singular, it is treated as a plural when it means \"We\". They are happy.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"box-note\">\n<div class=\"mt-section\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"box-legend lt-human-104354 editable\"><span class=\"lt-icon-default\">Note<\/span><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"lt-human-104354\"><strong>Vous<\/strong> can be singular as a formal way of saying you to one person, or it can be the plural you (y&#8217;all) as both a formal and informal way of addressing more than one person.<\/li>\n<li class=\"lt-human-104354\"><strong>Ce<\/strong> is a neutral (or impersonal) pronoun that can be translated to English as it, this or that. For example: <strong>Ce n&#8217;est pas un crayon<\/strong> (<strong>This<\/strong> is not a pencil). We saw this above in <strong>c&#8217;est<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"lt-human-104354\"><strong>On<\/strong> can mean one or you in an impersonal way, like In Paris one eats baguettes or In Paris you eat baguettes, where you means anyone visiting or living in Paris. In most French dialects, <strong>on<\/strong> is used instead of <strong>nous<\/strong> in everyday conversation. Thus, the sentence, <strong>En France, on aime manger du pain<\/strong> could mean <strong>In France, WE like to eat bread <\/strong>or <strong>In France, ONE likes to eat bread.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"lt-human-104354\">Il, elle, ils, elles. These pronouns don&#8217;t have to refer to people. For example, <strong>la soir\u00e9e<\/strong> (the party) = <strong>elle<\/strong> (it); <strong>le fromage<\/strong> (the cheese) = <strong>il<\/strong> (it); <strong>les livres<\/strong> (the books) = ils (they); <strong>les r\u00e8gles<\/strong> (the rules) = <strong>elles<\/strong> (they).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section_3\" class=\"mt-section\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"editable\">Nous vs. on<\/h3>\n<p class=\"lt-human-104354\"><strong>Nous <\/strong>always means &#8220;we&#8221; or &#8220;us&#8221;. <strong>On<\/strong>, however, can change meaning:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">(a) <strong>On \u2260 nous. On<\/strong> can be an impersonal pronoun like &#8220;one&#8221;, or &#8220;you&#8221; in English. For example:<strong> On mange beaucoup de fromage en France <\/strong>(One eats a lot of cheese in France)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">OR<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">(b) <strong>On = nous. It is &#8220;impersonal&#8221; because it is not referring to a specific person or group of individuals &#8211; just people in general.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section_5\" class=\"mt-section\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"editable\"><strong>On = Nous<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"lt-human-104354\">The subject pronoun <strong>o<\/strong><strong>n<\/strong> is often used in place of <strong>nous<\/strong> to express &#8220;we&#8221;. In fact, in most French dialects, people use <strong>on<\/strong> more than <strong>nous<\/strong> in everyday conversation. For example:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">Claire et moi, <strong>on<\/strong> aime le chocolat. (Claire and I, <strong>we<\/strong> love chocolate.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\"><strong>On<\/strong> est tr\u00e8s fatigu\u00e9s. (<strong>We<\/strong> are really tired.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\"><strong>On<\/strong> y va ! For example, the following sentence could mean two different things:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">En France <strong>on<\/strong> aime manger du pain<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">It could mean:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-2 lt-human-104354\">(1) In France we like to eat bread. [<strong>On<\/strong> = my friends and I = <strong>we<\/strong>]<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-2 lt-human-104354\">(2) In France one likes to eat bread. [<strong>On<\/strong> = people in general = <strong>one<\/strong>]<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-2 lt-human-104354\">In these examples, you can see how the line almost blurs between &#8220;we&#8221; and &#8220;one&#8221; when you speak in generalities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lt-human-104354\">In everyday speech, you want to get used to saying <strong>on<\/strong> instead of <strong>nous<\/strong>. In my experience, people rarely ever say <strong>nous<\/strong> unless it&#8217;s for clarification. Here are some examples.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">On est mari\u00e9s. = Nous sommes mari\u00e9s. (We are married.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">On est am\u00e9ricains. = Nous sommes am\u00e9ricains. (We are American.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-indent-1 lt-human-104354\">On est tr\u00e8s contents. = Nous sommes contents. (We are very happy.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"lt-human-104354\"><strong>Attention<\/strong>: Even though <strong>On<\/strong> is grammatically singular, it is treated as a plural when it means &#8220;We&#8221;.
