Adjectifs interrogatifs<\/h3>\r\n\r\n

The interrogative word quel<\/strong> (what or which) is a special case because it is an adjective and therefore must agree with the gender and number of the noun it modifies.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Quel<\/strong> jour sommes-nous ? (Which day is it?)<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Quels<\/strong> films aimes-tu ? (What movies do you like?)<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Tu es de quelle<\/strong> origine ? (What\u2019s your origin?)<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Quelles<\/strong> filles vont \u00e0 la soir\u00e9e ? (Which girls are going to the party?)<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Some uses of quel<\/strong> will require a preposition as well:<\/p>\r\n\r\n

De quelle<\/strong> couleur est la voiture ? (What color is the car?)<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Notice how quel<\/strong> is asking for specific information about a noun (i.e., num\u00e9ro de t\u00e9l\u00e9phone<\/strong>, amies<\/strong>), while Qu'est-ce que<\/strong> is asking about the object of the verb (manger<\/strong>).<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Quel<\/strong> est ton num\u00e9ro de t\u00e9l\u00e9phone ? (What is your telephone number?)<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Qu'est-ce que<\/strong> tu vas manger ? (What are you going to eat?)<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Pronoms interrogatifs<\/h3>\r\n\r\n

The interrogative pronoun lequel <\/strong>(which one) refers to something previously mentioned:<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Quelles pommes<\/strong> voulez-vous ? Lesquelles<\/strong> voulez-vous ? (Which apples do you want? Which ones do you want?)<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In the example above, you can only use lesquelle<\/strong> when you already know that you are talking about apples (pommes<\/strong>). Just like quel<\/strong>, lequel<\/strong> must always agree in gender and number with the noun to which it is referring.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
