Etymologically, then, a million is a \u201cbig thousand.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;text-indent: 36pt\">Number words beyond a million are formed from Latin numeral prefixes plus the spurious base <b>-(i)llion<\/b> (by analogy from <i>million<\/i>). The nomenclature is confusing, for two reasons:<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;text-indent: 36pt\">1. The numerical values differ in American and British usage.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;text-indent: 36pt\">2. The words themselves combine two sets of standard Latin prefixes.
