BRIEF HISTORY OF THE WOMEN'S MOVEMENT IN IRAN: TEXT ONLY VERSION<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

1920<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Women's rights were focused around the Veil<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Education became more accessible<\/span><\/p>\r\n

1930<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

The veil was banned in 1936 Many women did not leave the house due to fear of being attacked by extremists<\/span><\/p>\r\n1940<\/strong>\r\n

The ban against head coverings was removed, therefore becoming optional. \u2022 The Iranian Women's Party was founded \u2022 The first women's sufferage bill was brought forward though was denied by the government.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

1950<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Women gained the right to vote on a municipal level in 1952<\/span><\/p>\r\n1963<\/strong>\r\n

Women got the right to vote\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The right to run for parliament<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The right to have\/obtain a divorce and keep custody of their children.<\/p>\r\n

1970<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Women had 22 seats in parliament and <\/span>more than 200 in local council<\/span><\/p>\r\n

1979<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\r\n

R<\/span>evolution about women's rights and the compulsory hijab.<\/span><\/p>\r\n1980<\/strong>\r\n

Hijab was mandated and was brought to assent by the Islamic republic.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Other rights that women had were also stripped away.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

1990<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

\"Pink Revolution\" where women wore colorful hijabs\/veils in protest of the \"traditional\" colour of black<\/span><\/p>\r\n

2000<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Peaceful protests were held in objection to the discriminatory laws against women.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

2010<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

The \"My Stealthy Freedom\" movement was started by Masih Alinejad in 2014 where <\/span>Iranian women posted photos of themselves without the hijab or veil.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Zanan Magazine, a women's magazine, started publishing after being shut down in 2008 by the government for how it portrayed women in Iran.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
