No lurking in the cyberspace background. It is not enough to login and read the discussion thread of others. For the maximum benefit to all, everyone must contribute.\r\n\r\n<em><strong>Report Glitches<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Discussion forums are electronic. They sometimes break. If for any reason you experience difficulty participating, please email or otherwise inform me of the issue. Chances are others are having the same problem.\r\n\r\n<em><strong>Help Others:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0You may have more experience with online discussion forums than the person next to you. Give them a hand. Show them it\u2019s not so hard. They\u2019re really going to appreciate it!\r\n\r\n<em><strong>Be Patient:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Read everything in the discussion thread before replying. This will help you avoid repeating something someone else has already contributed. Acknowledge the points made with which you agree and suggest alternatives for those with which you don\u2019t.\r\n\r\n<em><strong>Be Brief:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0You want to be clear\u2014and to articulate your point\u2014without being preachy or pompous. Be direct. Stay on point. Don\u2019t lose yourself, or your readers, in overly wordy sentences or paragraphs.\r\n\r\n<em><strong>Use Proper Writing Style:<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"color: #004712\">\u00a0<\/span>This is a must. Write as if you were writing a term paper. Correct spelling, grammatical construction and\r\nsentence structure are expected in every other writing activity associated with scholarship and academic engagement. Online discussions are no different.\r\n\r\n<em><strong>Cite Your Sources:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Another big must! If your contribution to the conversation includes the intellectual property (authored material) of others, e.g., books, newspaper, magazine, or journal articles\u2014online or in print\u2014they must be given proper attribution.\r\n\r\n<strong><em>Emoticons and Texting:<\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #993300\">\u00a0<\/span>Social networking and text messaging has spawned a body of linguistic shortcuts that are not part of the\r\nacademic dialogue. Please refrain from<strong>\u00a0:-)<\/strong>\u00a0faces and\u00a0<strong>c u l8r<\/strong>\u2019s.\r\n\r\n<em><strong>Respect Diversity:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0It\u2019s an ethnically rich and diverse, multi-cultural world in which we live. Use no language that is\u2014or that could be construed to be\u2014offensive toward others. Racist, sexist, and heterosexist comments and jokes are unacceptable, as are derogatory and\/or sarcastic comments and jokes directed at religious beliefs, disabilities, and age.\r\n\r\n<em><strong>No YELLING!<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/span>Step carefully. Beware the electronic footprint you leave behind.\u00a0Using bold upper-case letters is bad form, like stomping around and yelling at somebody\u00a0<strong>(NOT TO MENTION BEING HARD ON THE EYE)<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n<strong><em>No Flaming!<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Criticism must be constructive, well-meaning, and well-articulated. Please, no tantrums. Rants directed at any other contributor are simply unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The same goes for profanity. The academic environment expects higher-order language.\r\n\r\n<strong><em>Lastly, Remember: You Can't Un-Ring the Bell.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Language is your only tool in an online environment. Be mindful. How others perceive you will be largely\u2014as always\u2014up to you. Once you've hit the send button, you've rung the bell.\r\n\r\nReview your written posts and responses to ensure that you\u2019ve conveyed exactly what you intended.
