Checklists

Checklists
Quick Start Guide

Checklists are primarily used as a tool for students to help track their progress within a module. Checklists support learners in completing learning activities, assessments and for assignment preparation, or to simply help students remain on top of their learning and help them stay organized.

Example of a Brightspace Checklist

Building a Checklist

Step 1:

From the toolbar in your course, select Course Admin > Checklists.

Step 2:

Select New Checklist.

Step 3:

Name your checklist, add a description as needed, and click Save. Note: You have the option to check “Open this checklist in a new window when viewed”.

Step 4:

Click New Category to add a category to your checklist.

Step 5:

Name your category and provide a description as needed. Click Save. For example, if you have weekly readings and assignments, these would be your categories.

Step 6:

Click New Items to add individual items to your categories. Choose from existing categories in the dropdown.

Step 7:

Name your item and add a description as needed.

Note: You have the option to include a Due Date for the item. If desired, check the box and set the due date and time. If you use due date, we recommend checking the box “Display in Calendar” as well.

Step 8:

Click Save. Repeat as needed.

When you’ve completed your checklist click Save and Close. Preview your checklist by expanding the dropdown beside your checklist and clicking Preview in a new window.

IMPORTANT!

Checklists need to be added to a relevant module in Course Materials from Existing Activities. Why? When a checklist is created, it is not visible to students unless it is added to Course Materials > Content. Follow the instructions below to add a Checklist to Course Materials.

Adding Checklists to Content Modules

Step 1:

Go to Course Materials > Content.

Step 2:

In the module you wish to add the checklist, expand the Existing Activities dropdown and click Checklist.

Step 3:

In the new window that appears, choose the checklist you created.

Use Cases for Checklists

  • Organization and Time Management
  • Project-Based Learning
  • Weekly Learning Objectives and Tasks
  • Feedback and Reflection
Ensure the checklist you created is added to a module within Course Materials.
