In all options, grade items can be organized into categories and the weight or point value of individual items within the category can be distributed equally or manually.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #8e0f09\"><strong>Weighted System<\/strong>: <\/span>grades are calculated as a percentage of the final grade. In a Weighted gradebook system, the gradebook percentage weight must equal 100%. If it does not, the Manage Grades page will display an error to the instructor.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #8e0f09\"><strong>Points System<\/strong>: <\/span>grade items are calculated using a points system in which the points assigned to each item are totaled for the final grade. In a Points gradebook system, the sum of the points of the individual assessments does not have to equal 100.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #8e0f09\"><strong>Formula System<\/strong>: <\/span>grade items are calculated using the points systems, and a can custom defined formula can be created to set conditions around how grade items contribute to the final grade.\r\n<div class=\"quick\">\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #8e0f09\"><strong>Our Recommendation<\/strong><\/span>\r\n<div class=\"imgcontainer\">\r\n\r\n<img class=\"noborder alignnone wp-image-1301 size-full\" style=\"min-width: 96px\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/langaraquickguides\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2149\/2024\/03\/BestPractice-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"auto\" height=\"100\" \/>\r\n<div class=\"media_text\">\r\n\r\nUse the <strong>Weighted Grading System<\/strong> because it:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Aligns with course syllabi<\/strong> \u2013 Matches the grade distributions commonly outlined in course syllabi<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Allows for flexible weighting<\/strong> \u2013 Different types of assessments can have varying impacts on the final grade<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Supports varied point values<\/strong> \u2013 Individual assessments can have different point values without affecting their weight<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Enhances student transparency<\/strong> \u2013 Shows the relative importance of different assessments<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Provides instructor flexibility<\/strong> \u2013 Makes it easier to modify grading structures if needed<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--list\">Step 3: Final Grade Released<\/div>\r\nDetermines which overall grade will be displayed to students when final grade is released to students. Note that students won't see any final grade until you explicitly release it.\r\n<div class=\"quick\"><span style=\"color: #8e0f09;margin-bottom: 0\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/span>\r\nStudent view of gradebook without final grade released\r\n<img class=\"wp-image-2432 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/langaraquickguides\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2149\/2025\/05\/Grades-1.png\" alt=\"Student view of gradebook without final grade released\" width=\"1016\" height=\"330\" \/><\/div>\r\n<span style=\"color: #8e0f09\"><strong>Calculated Final Grade<\/strong><\/span>: the final grade is calculated based on the established grading formula in Step 1 and Step 3. With this selection the final grade is automatically calculated based on what is in the gradebook. You cannot adjust the final grade without adjusting grade item scores. <span style=\"font-size: 1em\">If released, overall grade, based on the established grading formula, will be displayed in the student view of the gradebook. This can be set up to automatically update as new assessments are completed.<\/span>\r\n<div class=\"quick\"><span style=\"color: #8e0f09;margin-bottom: 0\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/span>\r\nStudent view of grade book with Final Calculated Grade released\r\n<img class=\"wp-image-2433 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/langaraquickguides\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2149\/2025\/05\/Grades-2.png\" alt=\"Student view of grade book with Final Calculated Grade released\" width=\"1039\" height=\"480\" \/><\/div>\r\n<span style=\"color: #8e0f09\"><strong>Adjusted Final Grade<\/strong><\/span>: allows for manual changes to the final grade calculation without affecting grade item scores. An Adjusted Final Grade is a final grade that you must manually enter to override the calculated final grade. If released, students will not see an overall grade in their gradebook if adjusted grade is not manually entered. If you do not choose to automatically release final grades, then <span style=\"font-size: 1em;text-align: initial\">Final Grade needs to be manually released in order for students to see their overall progress. See <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1em;text-align: initial\" href=\"https:\/\/iweb.langara.ca\/brightspace-instructor-help\/my-tools\/grades\/releasing-final-grades-to-students\/#aioseo-how-to-release-the-final-calculated-grade-instead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">instructions for releasing final grades<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1em;text-align: initial\">.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 1em\">Note: As of January 2026, Automatically release final grade will be available. <\/span>\r\n<div class=\"quick\">\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #8e0f09;margin-bottom: 0\"><strong>Our Recommendation<\/strong><\/span>\r\n<div class=\"imgcontainer\">\r\n\r\n<img class=\"noborder alignnone wp-image-1301 size-full\" style=\"min-width: 96px\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/langaraquickguides\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2149\/2024\/03\/BestPractice-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"auto\" height=\"100\" \/>\r\n<div class=\"media_text\"><strong>Use Calculated Final Grade during the semester<\/strong> as it automatically displays students' overall progress, if released. If you need to adjust final grades at the end of the semester, you can switch to Adjusted Final Grades at that point. Remember that if adjusted final grades are not populated, students will not see their overall progress.<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--list\"><a id=\"calc\"><\/a>Step 4: Grade Calculations<\/div>\r\nDetermines how ungraded items in your gradebook will be dealt with in the final grade calculations.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #8e0f09\"><strong>Drop ungraded items<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/span>ungraded items in the gradebook are not taken into consideration in the Calculated Final Grade. The weight of each completed grade item within a category that contains ungraded items will be redistributed in the category and these items will have a greater weight than would be once all assessments are completed.\r\n<div class=\"quick\"><span style=\"color: #8e0f09;margin-bottom: 0\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/span>\r\nIf an \"Exams\" category worth 50% of the overall course grade has two midterms (worth 12.5% each) and a final exam worth 25% and only the midterms are graded, those midterms will be valued at 25% in the final calculated grade instead of 12.5% when ungraded items are dropped. Example Exams category with midterms weighted higher when ungraded items are dropped\r\n<img class=\"size-full wp-image-2445\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/langaraquickguides\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2149\/2025\/04\/Grades-4-1.png\" alt=\"Example Exams category with midterms weighted higher when ungraded items are dropped\" width=\"3986\" height=\"849\" \/><\/div>\r\nConcerns:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"margin-top: 0px\">Students cannot easily determine how the remainder of the assessments factor into their overall progress.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Unsubmitted assessments need to be manually entered as 0 for any ungraded items at the end of term.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Could result in an inaccurate snapshot of overall performance for the student and instructor especially if more heavily-weighted assessments occur later in the term.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nSolution:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Manually generate a milestone calculated grade item for students to see their performance. Milestone grade calculations do not redistribute ungraded items within a category and uses a reduced total to accurately represent student progress. See<a href=\"https:\/\/iweb.langara.ca\/brightspace-instructor-help\/my-tools\/grades\/grades-settings\/milestone-grade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> instructions on creating milestone grade items<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"color: #8e0f09\"><strong>Treat ungraded items as 0<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/span>ungraded items in the gradebook are taken into consideration in the Calculated Final Grade. The final calculated grade is additive with each entered grade improving the overall grade for the student.\r\n<div class=\"quick\"><span style=\"color: #8e0f09;margin-bottom: 0\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/span>\r\nExample Exams category with midterms accurately weighted when ungraded items are treated as 0\r\n<img class=\"size-full wp-image-2446\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/langaraquickguides\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2149\/2025\/04\/Grades-5.png\" alt=\"Example Exams category with midterms accurately weighted when ungraded items are treated as 0\" width=\"3970\" height=\"820\" \/><\/div>\r\nConcerns:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Students appear to be failing the course until they have completed a significant number of activities in the course.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Any hidden grade items will also be factored into the calculated final grade<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nSolution:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>If calculated final grades are released to students, instructor should explain the gradebook structure.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Hidden grade items should be deleted, if not used. See <a href=\"https:\/\/iweb.langara.ca\/brightspace-instructor-help\/my-tools\/grades\/deleting-grade-items\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">instructions for deleting grade items<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"color: #8e0f09\"><strong>Automatically keep final grade updated<\/strong>: <\/span>if checked, the Final Calculated Grade will be continuously updated when new grades are added to the gradebook allowing students to see their real-time progress.\r\n<div class=\"quick\">\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #8e0f09;margin-bottom: 0\"><strong>Our Recommendation<\/strong><\/span>\r\n<div class=\"imgcontainer\">\r\n\r\n<img class=\"noborder alignnone wp-image-1301 size-full\" style=\"min-width: 96px\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/langaraquickguides\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2149\/2024\/03\/BestPractice-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"auto\" height=\"100\" \/>\r\n<div class=\"media_text\"><strong>Treat ungraded items as 0 and enable automatic grade updates<\/strong> as this provides the most accurate representation of student standings for both instructors and students regardless of whether final grades are released.<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--list\">Step 5: Student View Display Options<\/div>\r\nDetermines what students are able to view in the gradebook.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #8e0f09\"><strong>Points grade<\/strong>:<\/span> displays the points scored for each grade item.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #8e0f09\"><strong>Weighted grade<\/strong>:<\/span> displays the weight of the grade item in relation to the calculated final grade (based on what you chose in Step 3)\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #8e0f09\"><strong>Grade scheme symbol<\/strong>:<\/span> displays the symbol associated with the grade scheme. By default, this would be the percentage students score on the grade item. Milestone grade calculations do not redistribute ungraded items within a category and uses a reduced total to accurately represent student progress.
