39 Lock 4: Praxis

You now have these skills but if you aren’t using them your students are locked out. Are you maintaining unnecessary barriers to student success by closing the gates behind you?

“Are your beliefs aligned with your current digital accessibility literacy skills, and your daily digital choices and actions?” CanDARE

Learning something new, in this case improving your digital accessibility skills, is meaningless if you don’t start using that new knowledge. As you create new content or update existing material, implement your new skills into your workflow. This will make a tangible difference for your learners by making material more accessible allowing for independent and inclusive learning.

Ok, now what?

  1. Take stock of you learning materials (readings, PowerPoints, Brightspace content)
  2. Use accessibility checkers such as those built-in to Brightspace and Office programs
  3. Incorporate new skills when updating and creating content
    1. Do not try to go back and fix every accessibility error all at once
  4. Refer to the materials in this course
    1. Ask for support
  5. Congratulate yourself for learning something new and creating a more accessible and inclusive learning environment
