A vision of how to do things better or differently, something that may have never been done or meet a need that is not being met. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\"><span>Your idea is your first step. This could mean starting a business or could entail expanding an existing venture. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\"><span>Very few entrepreneurs starting their first business are business people. In Michael Gerber\u2019s book the E myth contractor, he talks about \u201ctechnicians suffering from an entrepreneurial seizure\u201d. Just because you are good at your trade does not mean that you know how to run a business. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\"><span>50% of all small businesses fail in their first 5 years. Most of the rest will fail in the next 5. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\"><span>Why? <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\"><span>Most of those who start have no idea how to build a business. They spent at least 4 years going through an apprenticeship or university to become proficient in their trade. Why do they think that starting a business should be any different?<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\r\n<div class=\"section\">\r\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\r\n<div class=\"column\">\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\"><strong>What is your Why? <\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">What separates the businesses that succeed from the ones that fail?\u00a0 It is what Simon Sinek calls finding out your \"why\".\u00a0 The why helps determine what sets you apart, what makes you different than any other business.\u00a0 A true understanding of your why will help you determine if the work you are doing (and the business you are building) will actually matter, to both you and the world.<\/p>\r\n[embed]https:\/\/youtu.be\/u4ZoJKF_VuA[\/embed]\r\n<h2 class=\"no-indent\"><span>The Big Three questions<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<h3 class=\"no-indent\"><span style=\"text-indent: 1em;font-size: 14pt\">1. What does your business do, or what do you want your business to do?<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">This one is an easy question.\u00a0 You can be as generic as you want:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">I want to start an electrical company.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">I want to start an accounting firm.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">I am building an app<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3 class=\"no-indent\">2.\u00a0 How do you plan to do it?<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">This question gets a little deeper.\u00a0 Often times this is called the Unique selling proposition (USP).\u00a0 This is what you do that sets your company apart from others in your industry.\u00a0 Some examples of USP:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li class=\"no-indent\">Show up on time<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"no-indent\">Always come on budget<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"no-indent\">Uniforms and friendly service<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3 class=\"no-indent\">3.\u00a0 Why are you doing it?<\/h3>\r\nThis question will often get the answer, \"I want to make money\".\u00a0 Making money is not an answer to why are you doing it, making money is the result of the what and the how.\u00a0 What is meant by why requires answering questions such as:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>What excites you?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>What is your passion?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>What is your belief about how the world should operate?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nDiscovering what your why is, is not an easy task.\u00a0 It will take some time and some reflection.\u00a0 Discovering your WHY is discovering your purpose and how it affects EVERYTHING that you do.
