Your values become your destiny.\"<\/em>\r\n\r\n-Mahatma Ghandi<\/blockquote>\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--learning-objectives\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Learning Objectives<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n\r\nIn this chapter, you will be introduced to the concepts of values and their importance in your personal life.\r\n\r\nThis chapter will help you:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Identify the 4 different types of values.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Determine your personal core values.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Reflect on how your core values influence how you make decisions.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>What is a value?<\/h2>\r\nIn order for you to be able to determine what your values are, it is important that we first define what we mean by the term \"value\".\r\n\r\nIn their essence values are the guiding principles in our lives that direct us and help us persevere.\u00a0 You may already be aware of some of the guiding principles that direct your life.\u00a0 Some are quite easy to determine, family first, honesty, dependability are values that are easy to identify and easy to align with.\u00a0 Yet there may be other unconscious values that you are not aware of that guide you such as survival, security, work, independence.\r\n\r\nPatrick M. Lencioni (2002), states that there are 4 types of values:\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li><strong>Core values:<\/strong>\u00a0 These are the values that guide all of your actions.\u00a0 They are the values that truly make you an individual.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Aspirational values:<\/strong> These are values that you aspire to have.\u00a0 They are values that you are working towards but do not yet have in place.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Permission to play values:<\/strong> These are values that you value yet are willing to let slide should the situation arise.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Accidental values:\u00a0<\/strong> These values are determined by the people you may be with or aspire to be like.\u00a0 These values aren't cultivated or even recognized.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n[embed]https:\/\/youtu.be\/5JUxDXaeWcQ[\/embed]\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">When it comes to your life (and your business), understanding what your <em><strong>core values<\/strong><\/em> are matters.\u00a0 Values are your guides, they help you navigate throughout your daily life.\u00a0 The clearer you are about your values, and how you define them, the easier it is for you to stay on the path that you would like to see for your life and business.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">Most of us, however, do not know what our core values are.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>How to determine our values.<\/h2>\r\nValues are an intrinsic part of who we are.\u00a0 We are being guided by them whether we are conscious of it or not, yet there is so much more power to them if we understand what they are.\u00a0 In fact, some would say that it is critical when it comes to running a business or leading a team.\u00a0 Determining what your core values are can be overwhelming at first, but it doesn't have to be. Here are some tips to determine your core values.\r\n<h3 class=\"no-indent\"><strong>\u00a0What is in a name?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nIf you are having a hard time trying to identify values there are many lists online that can get you started.\u00a0 For example:\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/leadershipfortrades\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/779\/2019\/07\/Core-Values-1.pdf\"><img src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/leadershipfortrades\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/779\/2019\/07\/Core-Values-791x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"791\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-80 size-large\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\n<em><strong>Click on the image for a list of 330 core values.<\/strong><\/em>\r\n\r\nAs you read through the list, grab a pen and paper and write down the words that resonate most with you.\r\n<h3><strong>Life experience.<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nOften times our values can be identified through life events. Take a moment and reflect on a time in your life that was meaningful, special, memorable?\u00a0 What was going on?\u00a0 What values do you think you may have been honouring at that moment.\r\n\r\nFor example, perhaps you are remembering the time you were promoted at work.\u00a0 Some values that could be identified are:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Hard work<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Ambition<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Belonging<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Success<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nNow think about a time when you were upset, frustrated, hurt.\u00a0 What was happening at that moment?\u00a0 What values were being challenged at that moment?\r\n<h3><strong>Determine your life code of conduct.<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nWhat is most important in your life?\u00a0 What are the things that make you feel fulfilled, content, whole?\u00a0 Take some time to reflect and answer these questions?\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>What are the things that you find yourself continuously arguing or defending to others?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>What are the issues that make you the most upset?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>What makes you happiest in your life?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>How do you believe the world should be?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nUse the list of core values provided above to help identify values that resonate as you reflect and write down your answers.\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: 1em;font-style: italic\">Know thyself<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">This step will take some honesty on your part.\u00a0 Answer the following questions:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>What have been your three biggest accomplishments?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>What common rules or themes can you identify from them?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>What have been your three biggest failures?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>What common themes can you identify?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nAfter you have reflected on the previous exercise try to identify core values that have come from both your accomplishments and your failures.\r\n<h3><strong><em>Who do you love and admire and why?<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\r\nWho are the people that you most admire in your life?\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 What attributes do they possess that you admire most?\u00a0 Use the list of core values to see if you can identify values that they possess and you would like to adopt.\r\n<h3><strong>So what?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nYou hopefully now have identified some values that you possess (or wish to possess).\u00a0 At this point all they may be are words on a page.\u00a0 They are only as valuable as the paper you wrote them on.\u00a0 So now that you have a list, so what?\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">The purpose of core values is to help you filter your choices.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">When making decisions in your personal life (or your company) ask yourself if they align with your core values.\u00a0 How can you do this?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Read your core values daily.\u00a0 Write them out and have them in a place you can find them.\u00a0 Be intentional in your reading of them.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Align your goals with your values.\u00a0 Every goal should align in some way with a core value that you have written down.\u00a0 If not you need to ask yourself why it doesn't?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Get feedback.\u00a0 Talk to people who know you well.\u00a0 Ask them where they see your values showing up in your life.\u00a0 Be prepared that you may hear some things that may not be easy to hear.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><strong>This too shall change<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nYou are not the same person you were 5 years ago, 1 year ago, last week.\u00a0 Why should your values be any different?\u00a0 Take some time whether it be monthly or yearly to revisit your values.\u00a0 Are there some that no longer resonate?\u00a0 Are there some that need to be added to the list?\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">The most important thing is that your values don't just sit on a piece of paper in your desk.\u00a0 They need to be reviewed, reworked, reutilized in order to make a difference.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--exercises\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<h2 class=\"textbox__title\" style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">Exercises<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>Print out the list of core values.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Take some time to reflect on your personal core values using the ideas from this chapter.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Write down 5-10 core values that resonate the most with you.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\nReferences\/Resources\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>\u00a0Collaborative Agency Group (2012, July 13). <em>Core Values VS Permission to play values.<\/em>\u00a0[<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/5JUxDXaeWcQ\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/JG69mNpafbo<\/a>].
