This is called <strong data-start=\"430\" data-end=\"444\">estimating<\/strong>. When you estimate, you round numbers and then add them. It helps you check if your final answer makes sense.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 data-start=\"556\" data-end=\"573\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Why Estimate?<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p data-start=\"575\" data-end=\"618\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Imagine you are going away for the weekend:<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul data-start=\"619\" data-end=\"707\">\r\n \t<li data-start=\"619\" data-end=\"639\">\r\n<p data-start=\"621\" data-end=\"639\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Hotel: about $60<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"640\" data-end=\"660\">\r\n<p data-start=\"642\" data-end=\"660\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Meals: about $80<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"679\">\r\n<p data-start=\"663\" data-end=\"679\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Gas: about $40<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"680\" data-end=\"707\">\r\n<p data-start=\"682\" data-end=\"707\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Entertainment: about $100<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p data-start=\"709\" data-end=\"836\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Instead of calculating exactly, you might say:<\/span><br data-start=\"755\" data-end=\"758\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong data-start=\"758\" data-end=\"786\">60 + 80 + 40 + 100 = 280<\/strong><\/span><br data-start=\"786\" data-end=\"789\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000\">You estimated the total weekend cost: <strong data-start=\"827\" data-end=\"835\">$280<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr data-start=\"838\" data-end=\"841\" \/>\r\n\r\n<h3 data-start=\"843\" data-end=\"870\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Steps to Estimate a Sum<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\" data-start=\"872\" data-end=\"917\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Step 1: Identify the Place to Round To<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p data-start=\"918\" data-end=\"980\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Round each number to the <strong data-start=\"943\" data-end=\"977\">highest place value they share<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"1181\">\r\n \t<li data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"1040\">\r\n<p data-start=\"983\" data-end=\"1040\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">If both numbers are two-digit numbers, round to the tens.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"1041\" data-end=\"1131\">\r\n<p data-start=\"1043\" data-end=\"1131\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Once again, always round to the <strong>highest place value that both numbers share<\/strong>. For example, if one number has thousands and the other has only hundreds, round both to the hundreds place. If one number has <strong data-start=\"298\" data-end=\"310\">hundreds<\/strong> and the other has only <strong data-start=\"334\" data-end=\"342\">tens<\/strong>, round both to the <strong data-start=\"362\" data-end=\"370\">tens<\/strong> place.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"1132\" data-end=\"1181\">\r\n<p data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1181\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">If both have thousands, round to the thousands.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p data-start=\"1183\" data-end=\"1229\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">This makes the numbers easier to add mentally.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\" data-start=\"1231\" data-end=\"1263\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Step 2: Round Each Number<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p data-start=\"1264\" data-end=\"1328\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Use the digit <strong data-start=\"1278\" data-end=\"1294\">to the right<\/strong> of the one you are rounding to.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul data-start=\"1329\" data-end=\"1414\">\r\n \t<li data-start=\"1329\" data-end=\"1370\">\r\n<p data-start=\"1331\" data-end=\"1370\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">If it is <strong data-start=\"1340\" data-end=\"1353\">5 or more<\/strong>, round <strong data-start=\"1361\" data-end=\"1367\">up<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"1371\" data-end=\"1414\">\r\n<p data-start=\"1373\" data-end=\"1414\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">If it is <strong data-start=\"1382\" data-end=\"1397\">less than 5<\/strong>, round <strong data-start=\"1405\" data-end=\"1413\">down<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\" data-start=\"1416\" data-end=\"1454\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Step 3: Add the Rounded Numbers<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p data-start=\"1455\" data-end=\"1489\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">This gives your <strong data-start=\"1471\" data-end=\"1488\">estimated sum<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\r\nIn these examples, <strong>estimate<\/strong> the answer. You can use your estimate to help you check your answers.
