Renaming means changing from one place value to another.\n\nFor example:\n<ul>\n \t<li>1 ten can be renamed as 10 ones<\/li>\n \t<li>1 hundred can be renamed as 10 tens<\/li>\n \t<li>1\u00a0 thousand can be renamed as 10 hundreds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nRenaming is an important part of subtracting. Sometimes the digit on top is smaller than the digit you are subtracting. This means that you will have to rename before you can subtract. This is also called borrowing.\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--examples\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Example A: 293<\/p>\n\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\n\n2 hundreds, 9 tens, 3 ones\n\nrenamed 2 hundreds, <strong>8 tens, 13 ones<\/strong>\n\nYou borrow 1 ten.
