For example,

[latex]\\dfrac{3}{5}\\left(\\dfrac{ imes2}{ imes2}\\right)=\\dfrac{6}{10} = 0.6[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{1}{2}\\left(\\dfrac{ imes5}{ imes5}\\right)= \\dfrac{5}{10} = 0.5[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{4}{25}\\left(\\dfrac{ imes4}{ imes4}\\right)= \\dfrac{16}{100} = 0.16[/latex]

Exercise 2

Write as decimals.

[latex]\\dfrac{1}{2}=\\dfrac{5}{10}=0.5[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{2}{5}[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{7}{10}[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{4}{5}[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{21}{1000}[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{8}{25}[/latex]

Answers to Exercise 2

0.4

0.7

0.8

0.021

0.32

The following is a review of how to change a fraction to a decimal when it is not easy to make the denominator:

The line in a common fraction can be thought of as a divided by sign ÷
To change a common fraction to a decimal, do this:

numerator ÷ denominator = the decimal equivalent

Example A

[latex]\\dfrac{3}{4}[/latex] Think [latex]3 ÷ 4[/latex]

[latex]\\begin{array} {r}0.75\\\\ \\ 4\\enclose{longdiv}{3.00}\\\\28\\downarrow\\\\\\hline 20 \\hspace{0.1em} \\\\ 20\\hspace{0.1em} \\\\ \\hline\\end{array}[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{3}{4} = 0.75[/latex]

Example B

[latex]\\dfrac{3}{8}[/latex] Think [latex]3 ÷ 8[/latex]

[latex]\\begin{array}{r}0.375\\\\ 8\\enclose{longdiv}{3.000}\\\\24\\downarrow\\hspace{0.7em}\\\\\\hline60\\hspace{0.8em}\\\\56\\downarrow\\\\\\hline40\\hspace{0.1em}\\\\40\\hspace{0.1em}\\\\\\hline\\end{array}[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{3}{8} = 0.375[/latex]

Example C

[latex]\\dfrac{1}{3}[/latex] Think [latex]1 ÷ 3[/latex]

[latex]\\begin{array}{r}0.333\\\\ 3\\enclose{longdiv}{1.000}\\\\{9}\\downarrow\\hspace{0.5em}\\\\\\hline10\\hspace{0.5em}\\\\0\\downarrow\\hspace{0.1em}\\\\\\hline10\\end{array}[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{1}{3}= 0.333[/latex]

Exercise 3

Use the division method to write these common fractions as decimals.

[latex]\\dfrac{1}{2}[/latex] = [latex]\\begin{array}{r}0.5\\\\ 2\\enclose{longdiv}{1.0}\\\\-1.0\\\\ \\hline 0\\end{array}[/latex]
[latex]\\dfrac{1}{2} = 0.5[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{1}{4}[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{2}{5}[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{6}{12}[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{1}{8}[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{3}{8}[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{2}{3}[/latex]

[latex]\\dfrac{19}{20}[/latex]

Answers to Exercise 3

[latex]0.25[/latex]

[latex]0.4[/latex]

[latex]0.5[/latex]

[latex]0.125[/latex]

[latex]0.375[/latex]

[latex]0.\\overline6[/latex]

[latex]0.95[/latex]

The whole number in a mixed fraction stays a whole number in a mixed decimal. Rewrite the whole number to the left of the decimal.
