What Is a Conjunct Consonant?<\/h2>\r\n<p data-start=\"747\" data-end=\"897\">A conjunct consonant is a consonant cluster written as one joined form inside a single [pb_glossary id=\"7989\"]ak\u1e63ara[\/pb_glossary], or syllable block.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"899\" data-end=\"916\">This occurs when:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ol data-start=\"918\" data-end=\"1001\">\r\n \t<li data-section-id=\"8skq53\" data-start=\"918\" data-end=\"964\">two or more consonants come together, and<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-section-id=\"1s63su3\" data-start=\"965\" data-end=\"1001\">there is no vowel between them.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1pkh97u\" data-start=\"1003\" data-end=\"1024\">2.1 Key Principle<\/h3>\r\n<p data-start=\"1026\" data-end=\"1103\">The first consonant loses its inherent <em data-start=\"1065\" data-end=\"1068\">a<\/em> and joins the following consonant.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"1105\" data-end=\"1114\">Examples:<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"1116\" data-end=\"1207\">\u0915\u094d + \u0924 \u2192 \u0915\u094d\u0924 = <em data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1136\">kta<\/em><br data-start=\"1136\" data-end=\"1139\" \/>\u0938\u094d + \u0924 \u2192 \u0938\u094d\u0924 = <em data-start=\"1154\" data-end=\"1159\">sta<\/em><br data-start=\"1159\" data-end=\"1162\" \/>\u092a\u094d + \u0930 \u2192 \u092a\u094d\u0930 = <em data-start=\"1177\" data-end=\"1182\">pra<\/em><br data-start=\"1182\" data-end=\"1185\" \/>\u0917\u094d + \u092f \u2192 \u0917\u094d\u092f = <em data-start=\"1200\" data-end=\"1205\">gya<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"1209\" data-end=\"1315\">When a vowel sign is added, it applies to the entire cluster, not to the individual consonants separately.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"1317\" data-end=\"1326\">Examples:<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"1328\" data-end=\"1402\">\u0915\u094d\u0924 + \u093e \u2192 \u0915\u094d\u0924\u093e = <em data-start=\"1345\" data-end=\"1350\">kt\u0101<\/em><br data-start=\"1350\" data-end=\"1353\" \/>\u0915\u094d\u0924 + \u093f \u2192 \u0915\u094d\u0924\u093f = <em data-start=\"1370\" data-end=\"1375\">kti<\/em><br data-start=\"1375\" data-end=\"1378\" \/>\u0915\u094d\u0924 + \u0941 \u2192 \u0915\u094d\u0924\u0941 = <em data-start=\"1395\" data-end=\"1400\">ktu<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1bn8bfc\" data-start=\"1404\" data-end=\"1430\">3. Consonant Half-Forms<\/h2>\r\n<p data-start=\"1432\" data-end=\"1467\">A half-form shows that a consonant:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ol data-start=\"1469\" data-end=\"1548\">\r\n \t<li data-section-id=\"1fpbqm9\" data-start=\"1469\" data-end=\"1491\">has no vowel, and<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-section-id=\"1b3jmoe\" data-start=\"1492\" data-end=\"1548\">must be read together with the following consonant.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p data-start=\"1550\" data-end=\"1598\">Nepali represents half-forms in three main ways.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 data-section-id=\"17reilo\" data-start=\"1600\" data-end=\"1651\">4. Pattern 1: Dropping the Right-Side Downstroke<\/h2>\r\n<p data-start=\"1653\" data-end=\"1685\">This is the most common pattern.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"1687\" data-end=\"1707\">The first consonant:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ol data-start=\"1709\" data-end=\"1787\">\r\n \t<li data-section-id=\"11fgtjn\" data-start=\"1709\" data-end=\"1744\">loses its vertical stroke, and<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-section-id=\"1k07qq8\" data-start=\"1745\" data-end=\"1787\">joins directly to the next consonant.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p data-start=\"1789\" data-end=\"1843\">This signals that the consonant has no inherent vowel.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 data-section-id=\"13qlhv7\" data-start=\"1845\" data-end=\"1861\">4.1 Key Idea<\/h3>\r\n<p data-start=\"1863\" data-end=\"1905\">full form \u2192 reduced shape \u2192 joined cluster<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"1907\" data-end=\"1922\">[table id=34 \/]<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 data-section-id=\"11xhscy\" data-start=\"1924\" data-end=\"1967\">5. Pattern 2: Trimming the Tail or Curve<\/h2>\r\n<p data-start=\"1969\" data-end=\"2060\">Some consonants change shape more subtly. Instead of dropping a full vertical stroke, they:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ol data-start=\"2062\" data-end=\"2179\">\r\n \t<li data-section-id=\"bsm0by\" data-start=\"2062\" data-end=\"2110\">simplify or shorten part of their form, and<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-section-id=\"gvpf6q\" data-start=\"2111\" data-end=\"2179\">adjust their shape to connect smoothly with the next consonant.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p data-start=\"2181\" data-end=\"2243\">This pattern is less common, but it is important to recognize.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1lg5dua\" data-start=\"2245\" data-end=\"2261\">5.1 Key Idea<\/h3>\r\n<p data-start=\"2263\" data-end=\"2316\">The shape changes, but the function remains the same:<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"2318\" data-end=\"2353\">no vowel + joins the next consonant<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"2355\" data-end=\"2370\">[table id=35 \/]<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1uzdzpt\" data-start=\"2372\" data-end=\"2410\"><span role=\"text\">6. Instead of always appearing in its full form, it is written using special cluster markers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1q1jv7p\" data-start=\"3073\" data-end=\"3111\"><span role=\"text\">9. \u0930 <em data-start=\"3081\" data-end=\"3085\">ra<\/em> as the First Member: Reph<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p data-start=\"3113\" data-end=\"3250\">When \u0930 <em data-start=\"3120\" data-end=\"3124\">ra<\/em> comes first in a cluster, as in \u0930\u094d + consonant, it appears as a mark above the following consonant.
