Overview<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Vowels are the foundation of Devan\u0101gar\u012b script. In Nepali, there are eleven main vowel letters, and each one functions as a complete [pb_glossary id=\"7989\"]ak\u1e63ara[\/pb_glossary] (syllable unit) on its own. For example, \u0905 = a<\/em>, \u0907 = i<\/em>, and \u0913 = o<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n

Each vowel letter can also appear in a second form called a vowel sign (m\u0101tr\u0101<\/em>)<\/strong>, which attaches to consonants. However, in this unit, we focus only on the independent vowel letters<\/strong>\u2014the full forms that can stand alone.<\/p>\r\n

Independent Vowel Letters<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n

In Devan\u0101gar\u012b, each independent vowel letter is a self-contained ak\u1e63ara<\/em><\/strong>. This means it does not require a consonant and already carries a complete vowel sound.<\/p>\r\n
