Oppenheimer (2006) varied how many complicated words were in a written piece. Some texts included a lot of complicated, large syllable words, other text used simpler language (the content of both texts was the same). He had participants read either the complicated or the simple text and rate the perceived intelligence of the author. He found that those who read the complex texts rated the author as less intelligent than those who read the simple texts.
