Formulated questions that are based on operationalized definitions

dependent variable

The variable that is measured as an outcome (effect)

descriptive statistics

Summary of the characteristics of your dataset

effect size

a measure of the magnitude of the experimental effect

extraneous variables

Variables that were not considered or variables you were not interested in studying that could affect the results of the experiment

independent variable

The variable that is manipulated the experimenter (cause)

inferential statistics

Allows for you to assess whether your data is generalizable to the broader population

manipulation check

A measure of how well the manipulation worked in affecting what it was intended to

operational definition

how a conceptual variable is measured in terms of practical terms

random assignment

A procedure used to ensure that each participant is given the same opportunity to be assigned to any group

statistical significance

Results have reached "statistical significance" if its corresponding p-value is less than .05.

testable question

Requires thought, attention, compromise, and an open acknowledgement of the pros and cons of methodological choices.
