The first step in doing so is finding a research question you think is worth pursuing, then translating your <em>conceptual<\/em> question into a <em>testable<\/em> one.\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--learning-objectives\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Learning Objectives<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n\r\n<em>For this lab assignment, you will be working with your team members to:<\/em>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Discuss group research interests<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Turn research interests into a potential\u00a0<em>conceptual\u00a0<\/em>research question<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Translate the\u00a0<em>conceptual\u00a0<\/em>research question into a\u00a0<em>testable\u00a0<\/em>research question<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h1>Overview<\/h1>\r\nWhat is the difference between a [pb_glossary id=\"101\"]conceptual question[\/pb_glossary] and [pb_glossary id=\"102\"]testable question[\/pb_glossary]? Conceptual questions are what you and your team ultimately want to research - and find answers to!\r\n\r\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Conceptual example<\/span>: Do students learn better online or in\u00a0person?<\/strong>\r\n\r\nYour team should begin by discussing the conceptual question you are most interested in answering. This is how research begins.\r\n\r\nOnce you have a conceptual question in mind, you will need to translate it into a testable question. For example, when asking whether students learn better online or in person, a few questions remain. What is meant by \"learning\" and how can you measure it? What is meant by \"better\"... a higher class grade? The feeling that you have learned something? Or something else?\r\n\r\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Testable example<\/span>: Do students rate their perceived learning as higher when prompted to think about online classes compared with when prompted to think about in person classes?<\/strong>\r\n\r\nNote that the testable example is more specific. It provides more details on how the conceptual question will be explored. An important concept when forming testable questions is an [pb_glossary id=\"104\"]operational definition[\/pb_glossary].
