Chapter 1: SOUNDS/ GREETINGS AND INTRODUCTIONS
Other sounds (Addak, Nasal, Half Sounds)
III:ii Nasal Sounds: Bindi and Tippee ( ਂ ੰ )
- Sometimes in Punjabi, a word may not use the full “m” or “n” sound – only a hint of an “m” or an “n” are heard.
- In this case, rather than using the n or m the bindi or tippee is used.
- The tippee looks like a circle with an opening on the bottom, ਮੰ
- The bindi looks like a dot, ਮਾੰ
- Both go on top of a consonant or beside a vowel that they are modifying
- Each one occurs with specific vowels.
The tippee is used with the following vowels:
Mukta | Sihari | Aunkar | Dulankar |
ਮੰ | ਿਮੰ | ਮੰੁ | ਮੰੂ |
The bindi is used with the following vowels:
Kanna | Bihari | Lanv | Dolanv | Horha | Kanaura |
ਮਾੰ | ਮੀੰ | ਮੇੰ | ਮੈੰ | ਮੋੰ | ਮੌੰ |
Exception:
When Aunkar ( ੁ ) and Dulankar ( ੂ ) are combined with Oorha (ਓ) which results in
(ਓੁ and ਓੂ) then bindi is used instead of the tippee.
So:
ਓੁਂ ੰ and ਓੂ ੰ = Incorrect
ਓੁ ਂ and ਓੂ ਂ = Correct
** JUST REMEMBER:
If there’s room on top for a tippee then use a tippee, otherwise just use the bindi.
