III:iii  Half Sounds: Adha Rara (   ) / Adha Haha (  ੵ ) Adha Vava ( Í )

 

 

Adha Rara (   )

  • partial “r” sound
  • horizontal loop and appears at the bottom right corner
  • used when you wish to blend two sounds together, such as br, pr, kr.  Therefore:

Bread   ਬਰੈਡ  buraed  = br

instead of ਬਰ (buru) it would be ਬ੍ਰ (bru)

Adha Haha  (  ੵ )

  • tone marker** (ਚਾਹ/ਘਾਹ)
  • It modifies the sound of the consonant that it is attached to
  • It is shaped like a little u and is placed at the bottom right corner of the consonant

Full h also acts as a tonal marker

ਚਾਹ ਬੁਹਤ

 

*Adha Vava (  Í )

  • Makes a partial “v” sound
  • shaped like a regular ਵ, with the top cut off and appears at the bottom right corner of the consonant that it appears with
  • It is used when you wish to blend the v sound with another consonant
