Versioning History

This page provides a record of edits and changes made to this book since its initial publication in the B.C. Open Textbook Collection. Whenever edits or updates are made, we make the required changes in the text and provide a record and description of those changes here. If the change is minor, the version number increases by 0.1. However, if the edits involve substantial updates, the version number goes up to the next full number. The files on our website always reflect the most recent version, including the Print on Demand copy.

If you find an error in this book, please fill out the Report an Open Textbook Error form. We will contact the authors, make the necessary changes, and replace all file types as soon as possible. Once done, the Versioning History page will be updated to reflect the edits made.

1.2 January 25, 2017 Reformatted Table 7.1. (Chapter 7 – Close Relationships: Liking and Loving over the Long Term) The table had been formatted incorrectly to make the information misleading.
1.3 February 3, 2017 Factual error fixed in the second paragraph before Table 7.1. (Chapter 7 – Close Relationships: Liking and Loving over the Long Term) Error: People with anxious/ambivalent attachment styles feel good about themselves (the goal of self-concern is being met), but they do not have particularly good relations with others. People with avoidant attachment styles are primarily other-concerned.

Correction: People with avoidant attachment styles feel good about themselves (the goal of self-concern is being met), but they do not have particularly good relations with others. People with anxious/ambivalent attachment styles are primarily other-concerned.

1.4 September 12, 2018 Wording error fixed in the third paragraph under the “Operant Learning” heading in Chapter 2: Sources of Social Knowledge. Error: We learn, in part, because we have been positively reinforced for engaging in the appropriate ones and negatively reinforced for engaging in the inappropriate ones.

Correction: We learn, in part, because we have been reinforced for engaging in the appropriate ones and punished for engaging in the inappropriate ones.

1.5 January 14, 2019 Table 1.3 formatting error fixed in Chapter 1: Conducting Research in Social Psychology. The original table had a number of operational definitions listed incorrectly as conceptual variables.
1.6 June 5, 2019 Updated the book’s theme. The styles of this book have been updated, which may affect the page numbers of the PDF and print copy.
1.7 September 23, 2019 Updated the book’s theme.

Clarified wording in Chapter 4 – Attitudes, Behavior, and Persuasion: Changing Attitudes by Changing Behavior.

Error: Although insufficient justification leads people to like something less because they (incorrectly) infer that they did not engage in a behavior due to internal reasons, it is also possible that the opposite may occur.

Correction: Although insufficient justification may lead people to like something less because they (incorrectly) infer that the reason they did not engage in a behavior was due to internal reasons, it is also possible that the opposite may occur.

1.08 August 6, 2021 Wording error in the Key Takeaways in The Role of Affect: Moods and Emotions. Error: Positive mood states increase helping, and negative affective states, particularly guilt, reduce it.

Correction: Both positive mood states and negative affective states (particularly guilt) can increase helping.
