DAY 5: Overview

During Day 5, you will have an opportunity to think about the past four days and demonstrate your new skills and knowledge in online blended learning. On Day 4 we asked you to work on a mini-project of your choice that represented the application of one or more concepts to your actual course. Whether you worked on your syllabus, your canvas course, or simply reflected and made a “to-do list”, you have begun the process of transforming your course to align with blended online learning principles. Today, you will be sharing what you’ve done, where you’re at, and what your next steps are.

Through our synchronous session, you will each have time to share your changes/plan with your peers and receive feedback. Following that, we will share back some key thoughts from the week together in one large group. This module will help you refine your work, build in feedback/ideas from your peers, and get ready to implement it into your course. This is just the beginning of your online teaching journey!

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate your understanding of strategies for effective blended online learning;
  • Articulate to peers the work you have done in aligning your course to an online blended learning approach;
  • Respond to blended online learning strategies shared by your peers;
  • Synthesize your learning and articulate key ideas from the past five days;
  • Identify your next steps for course planning after this workshop is complete.

Instructions: Small Group Presentations (50 min)

The final day of Transitioning to Online Teaching offers you a chance to share what you’ve worked on and gain valuable insights and feedback from your peers. This will be divided into Small group presentations/discussions (for the first 50 mins) and afterwards, in a large group share-back and wrap up session (for 20 minutes).

The small group component of our synchronous session will take place in groups of 3. We will put you into groups of 3 and provide you with an online link to meet your peers virtually.

Timing Overview (50 mins in your small group):

  • 5 mins: Introduce yourselves; Assign Timekeeper and Group Representative
  • 10 mins: Presenter 1 (5 for sharing/presenting; 5 for feedback/discussion)
  • 10 mins: Presenter 2
  • 10 mins: Presenter 3
  • 5  mins: Discussion and planning for share back: Strategies, Surprises, and Still Unsure

1) When you arrive in your small group session, you have 5 minutes to:

  • Introduce yourselves briefly (name, faculty, the course you’re working on)and
  • Review your task for the next 50 mins.
  • Assign a timekeeper

Please assign the following 2 roles:

1) A Time-keeper to keep the session on track so that you can ensure all group participants have a chance to share work and gain insights and feedback from one another.

2) When introductions are complete, you have 30 minutes for individual presentations and feedback (10 mins per person)

Presenter Instructions

Each presenter will have 5 minutes for sharing any of the following:

  • What did you work on this week?
  • What changes have you made to your course?
  • What are your next steps?
  • (Optional): What are you still unsure about or what challenge seems most daunting to you?

Following the five minutes, each presenter will have 5 minutes for hearing general feedback. Peers may wish to offer:

  • suggestions
  • questions
  • resources
  • strategies that have worked (or not worked) for you
  • course contents like slides, assessments, or syllabi

3) After presentations are complete, you will have 5 minutes to discuss and plan your group’s share-back with everyone

Take these 10 minutes to wrap up any ongoing discussions and to think ahead to the final 30 minute session in which you will join the full TBLE group. You will be asked to briefly share with the large group:

  • Strategy: What are specific useful strategies/changes that your peers have worked on?
  • Surprise: Was there anything surprising or unexpected about your course transformations?
  • Still Unsure: What questions or concerns still remain? What are you still unsure about?

You’re ready to join the rest of your peers for some wrap up conversation and next steps.
