{"id":935,"date":"2022-05-03T11:31:12","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T15:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/unbc\/?post_type=chapter&#038;p=935"},"modified":"2025-05-02T12:31:55","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T16:31:55","slug":"groups","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/unbc\/chapter\/groups\/","title":{"raw":"How to Use Groups in Moodle","rendered":"How to Use Groups in Moodle"},"content":{"raw":"<h5><strong>Using Groups in Moodle<\/strong><\/h5>\r\nThere are two ways in which you can organize students into <strong>Groups<\/strong> in Moodle:\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li><strong>On a course level<\/strong> - in which students are organized into groups and can set as the default mode for all activities (e.g. <strong>Discussion Forums<\/strong>) defined within that course.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Activity level<\/strong> - Each Activity (e.g. <strong>Assignment<\/strong>, <strong>Discussion Forums<\/strong>, etc.) that supports groups can also have its own group mode defined.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<strong>Group Modes<\/strong>\r\n\r\nAs the instructor, you will have 3 choices on how to set and use the <strong>Group<\/strong> mode:\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li><strong>No groups<\/strong> - There are no sub groups, everyone is part of one big community<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Separate groups<\/strong> - Each group can only see their own group, others are invisible.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Visible groups<\/strong> - Each group works in their own group, but can also see other groups. (The other groups' work is read-only.)<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1549 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/unbc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/799\/2022\/05\/Group-Setting-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"464\" height=\"215\" \/>\r\n\r\nEnabling either <strong>Separate Groups<\/strong> or <strong>Visible Group<\/strong> on an <strong>Assignment<\/strong> drop-box enables instructors to filter the student submissions to see only those from a particular group. With <strong>Visible Groups<\/strong>, students can see which other groups are doing the same <strong>Activities<\/strong> as they are working on.
