Forum activities can be made with different formats and settings to facilitate various discussion goals and are, by nature, asynchronous.\r\n\r\nFiles such as images may be included in forum posts and, you can choose if you would like to grade the forum or not. Furthermore, students can also be given permission to mark each others posts.\r\n\r\nForums have many uses, including:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>A social space for students to get to know each other.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>A place for discussing course content or reading materials.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>A place for continuing online an issue raised previously in a face-to-face session.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>A place for students and teachers to exchange ideas.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><a id=\"Availability\"><\/a>\r\n<a href=\"#Availability\">Availability<\/a><\/h2>\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1396\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/unbc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/799\/2022\/05\/availability.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1810\" height=\"334\" \/>\r\n\r\n<strong>Due date<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Cut-off date<\/strong>: Specify the due date and cut-off date\/times for the forum. To use these settings, select the\u00a0<strong>Enable<\/strong>\u00a0checkbox next to each setting. The date settings will become editable. If the <strong>cut-off date<\/strong> is set, this is a hard close date. Meaning that students will not be able to contribute to a post after this date and time! Also, by default there is no due date and no cut-off date, and the forum will be available immediately and indefinitely.\r\n<h2><a id=\"Attachments-and-word-count\"><\/a>\r\n<a href=\"#Attachments-and-word-count\">Attachments and word count<\/a><\/h2>\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1397\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/unbc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/799\/2022\/05\/attachments-wordcount.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1702\" height=\"608\" \/>\r\n\r\n<strong>The maximum attachment size<\/strong> is the maximum file size that may be attached to a forum post.\r\n\r\n<strong>The maximum number of attachments<\/strong> is the maximum number of files that may be attached to a forum post.\r\n\r\nIf <strong>Display word count<\/strong> is enabled, then the number of words in forum posts will be shown at the bottom of each post.\r\n<h2><a id=\"Subscription-and-tracking\"><\/a>\r\n<a href=\"#Attachments-and-word-count\">Subscription and tracking<\/a><\/h2>\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1398\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/unbc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/799\/2022\/05\/subscription-tracking.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1814\" height=\"366\" \/>\r\n\r\nWhen a participant is subscribed to a forum, it means they will receive post notifications to their UNBC email. There are 4 options here:\r\n\r\n<strong>Optional subscription <\/strong>\u2013 students can choose if they want to subscribe or not. The default setting.\r\n\r\n<strong>Forced subscription<\/strong> \u2013 all students are subscribed and cannot unsubscribe\r\n\r\n<strong>Auto subscription<\/strong> \u2013 right away everyone is subscribed but can choose to unsubscribe.\r\n\r\n<strong>Subscription disabled <\/strong>\u2013 subscriptions not allowed.\r\n<h2><a id=\"Discussion-locking\"><\/a>\r\n<a href=\"#Discussion-locking\">Discussion locking<\/a><\/h2>\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1399\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/unbc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/799\/2022\/05\/discussion-locking-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1664\" height=\"304\" \/>\r\n\r\nDiscussions can be automatically locked after a certain amount of time has passed since their last reply. The default for this is, for discussions to not be locked.\r\n<h2><a id=\"Post-threshold-for-blocking\"><\/a>\r\n<a href=\"#Post-threshold-for-blocking\">Post threshold for blocking<\/a><\/h2>\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1401\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/unbc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/799\/2022\/05\/post-threshold-for-blocking.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1672\" height=\"578\" \/>\r\n\r\nBy default students can post as many messages to a forum as they like. If this is enabled under <strong>Time period for blocking<\/strong>, you can restrict this number and block students after a certain numbers of days or a week. <strong>Post threshold for blocking<\/strong> is the number of posts a student is able to post within the time period of blocking that is set. You can also warn students that they are about to be blocked under the <strong>Post threshold for warning,<\/strong> by entering after how many posts that they will be warned that they will be blocked.\r\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">\r\n<div class=\"kt-row-column-wrap kt-has-1-columns kt-gutter-default kt-v-gutter-default kt-row-valign-top kt-row-layout-equal kt-tab-layout-inherit kt-m-colapse-left-to-right kt-mobile-layout-row\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-column inner-column-1 kadence-column_2d1339-4f\">\r\n<div class=\"kt-inside-inner-col\">\r\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Note<\/strong><\/span>:<\/span> In the above example, in 1 week, students can only post 7 times, and after 4 posts they get a warning that they will be blocked from posting soon.<\/h5>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><a id=\"Whole-forum-grading\"><\/a>\r\n<a href=\"#Whole-forum-grading\">Whole forum grading<\/a><\/h2>\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1402\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/unbc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/799\/2022\/05\/whole-grading-forum.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1552\" height=\"1042\" \/>\r\n\r\nWhole forum grading is used to view (and access) all of a student\u2019s posts on one page, to review, and assign a grade to them.\r\n\r\n<strong>Grade: <\/strong>Enter how you would like to grade your forum, scale or point.\r\n\r\n<strong>Grading method<\/strong>: You have the option to mark by simple direct grading, rubric and marking guide. By default, new assignments are set to Show. (This is comparable to using the Hide\/show icon for the activity on your course page.)\r\n\r\n<strong>Group mode, Grouping<\/strong>, If you want smaller group discussions then set the forum to Separate groups or Visible groups.\r\n\r\nThere are three group modes:\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li><strong>No groups\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 There are no sub groups think individual assignments and class discussions<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Separate groups<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Each group can only see their own group the other groups are invisible.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Visible groups<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Each group works in their own group, but can also see other groups. (The other groups\u2019 work is read-only.)<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\nA good example of the difference between separate groups and visible groups is when you are setting up a forum. Using groups with discussion forums allow you to have smaller group discussions. Separate groups mean only students in the same group can see and participate in discussions within a particular forum. Students will see a introduction text above the list of discussions. To post students see a button to start a new discussion button.
